He was about 12 years old when his father died. He appears to have spent most of his youth on the farm Uitkyk in the Roggeveld. On October 12, 1766 he married Hester Venter. She was born about 1750 and was baptized in Tulbagh. February 1750. She was apparently named after her maternal grandmother, Hester Nel. Hester Venter was the great-granddaughter of Henry and Anna Viljoen. Hendrik Venter was born in Germany and his name was first mentioned in 1690 at the Cape. Anna Viljoen was the daughter of Francois Villion and Cornelia Campenaar.
