Brief overview:

Hennie (80), was found murdered in the house of his farm in the Dwarsfontein area near Delmas, on Wednesday 16th November, when an unknown number of attackers gained entry by breaking a window to the lounge. The perpetrators had used a grinder to break open the security gate.

According to the police, Hennie and his life partner, Hester Smal (79), who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, were attacked in their home during the night or in the early morning.

The couple's farm workers suspected something was wrong when there was no answer at the farmhouse in the morning. They alerted the neighbours who rushed to the farm.

They first found Hester, and then Hennie, who had sustained severe injuries. Although the police could not confirm the cause of death, they suspect that he had been shot.

The house had been looted, and the police K9 unit found the safe in the field close to the farm house. It had been forced open and emptied. Three firearms were stolen.

The police’s forensic team arrived on the scene, while a neighbour took care of a very upset and confused Hester.
