Henry was born in Monongalia County, Virginia and moved to Upshur County, Virginia (later West Virginia).
He mustered into service in the Civil War on June 27, 1861 at French Creek, Virginia as part of Co. E 3rd West Virginia Infantry.
In June 1863 was reorganized to the 3rd West Virginia Infantry Mounted. In January of 1864 the 3rd Mounted Infantry was consolidated with other units to form the 6th West Virginia Cavalry.
Henry was in Company C. On June 26, 1864, he was captured at Springfield, West Virginia and taken to Andersonville Prison. He died there on November 16, 1864.
