Youngest child of Jacob Engel the first leader of the River Brethren, Henry was also a River Brethren Minister and leader in the movement.

On 11 Mar 1817 when Henry was 27, he married Hannah Myers (age 15), daughter of Henry Meyers & Barbara Brillhart. Born on 13 Feb 1802 in Washington Twp., Franklin Co., PA. Hannah died on 3 Nov 1840; she was 38. They had 11 children, two of whom died in infancy.

Three of Henry's sons married grand-daughters of Benjamin Brubacher of Lebanon County.
