About Henry C (Hoken) Nelson

a son of Nels Bengston. He attended the common schools until fifteen or sixteen years of age. when a young man of eighteen years he joined the Swedish army, It was said he was the personal groomeman of the king caring for his horse and helping the king mount, he served for eighteen years he may have had diabetes which caused his gangrene after his toes froze in very cold weather causing his death. The story goes why H enry C. Nelson and his wife Anna Johnson left Sweden Henry was one of the kings private soldiers and was under orders to never marry. Anna was one of the queens scullery maids. They wanted to marry but knew it was impossible in Sweden, so they decided to come to America.Anna had more freedom so she booked twopassages for America, packed his and her few belongings. Henry sneaked away and joined her on the ship. .In 1870 he crossed the Atlantic ocean to the United States and fqr a number of years he worked on the Keokuk dam in Iowa Gifted in being able to cure animals, was alson known to have cured people. Do not beleive he had special powers just used common sense and probably herbs. in 1876 he came to Saunders county, Nebr. purchasing one hundred and sixty acres of school land near Malmo, which he cultivated successfully untill called to rest in 1899. His family remained on the farm for five years and than took up their abode in Malmo.

Filed for record 9th day of January 1896, at 11:00 O'clock A.M. State of Nebraska to all whom these presents shall cone greeting. Where as on the 6th. day of April 1883 all the tract or parcel of common school land of the State of Nebraska hereafter mentioned and particularly described was sold in the manner proved by law to Henry C. Nelson of the county of Saunders and the State of Nebraska for the aggregate price of eleven hundred and twenty dollars and whereas, the sum of eleven hundred dollars has been fully paid to the proper receiving office for the State of Nebraska by Henry C. Nelson as shown by the records in the office of the commissioners of public land and building, the said sum being the whole amount of the purchase price for the said tract or parcel of land hereinafter described. Now know ye that the said State of Nebraska in pursuance of law in such a case made and proved consideration of the premises of the afore said sum of eleven hundred and twenty dollars to the state of Nebraska paid by these presents grant, bargain, sell convey, and confirm in fee unto the said Henry C. Nelson, his heirs and assigns all the said tract and parcel of land situated in the county of Saunders and State of Nebraska and described as follows to with the southwest quarter of section sixteen, township fifteen, and range six east of the PM containing one hundred and sixty acres, more or less according to the government survey to have and to hold the said premises and parcel of land above particularly described with the appurtenance thereon unto the said Henry C. Nelson, his heirs and assigns in fee simple forever in witness where of I the Governor of the state of Nebraska have hereonto signed my name and caused the Great Seal of the state to hereonto affixed this 31st. day of December AD 1895 by the governor sikas A. flolcorab. His religious faith was that of the Swedish Lutheran church and in his demise the community lost a worthy, respecter and representative citizen Mrs. Nelson has now lived in Saunders county for about four decades and has won a host of warm friends here. purched onr hundred and sixty acres of school land near Malmo.
