About Henry Knowles

The Paternal Lineage of HENRY⁶ KNOWLES is as follows: ( Robert⁵, Joseph⁴, Robert³, William², Henry¹)

The Maternal lineage of HENRY ⁷ KNOWLES is ( Lucy⁶ Anne Rodman, Mary⁵ Niles, Mary⁴ Hannah, Mary³ Tefft, Mary² Barber, Aliner¹ Hyde )

Let it be said that Henry Knowles was a Quaker minister. His lineage goes back to Henry¹Knowles (1608-1670) of Kingston-upon-Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England who emigrated first to Boston and then later to Warwick, Rhode Island.

Fortunately the Knowles line left Boston for Rhode Island because in Massachusetts Quakers were severely persecuted, but the governor of Rhode Island would not go along with the persecution going on in the other United Colonies of New England and in 1657 he granted permission to Quakers to remain in that Colony when he declared in the "Court of Trials" that "no settler or stranger within the limits of their jurisdiction "should be persecuted for whatever opinions in religion he might either hold or teach."
