MANY TREES WITH WRONG PARENTAGE!! Not son of The Indian Trader John Van Meter that is an different Henry.... some list his father as Abraham but locations don't match so not his father either. Some trees even list a Father named Henry but he is only 3 yrs younger so impossible. At this point I am leaving his parents unknown.

Parents have been added as Abraham Van Meter and Eliza Beth Van Meter. I am detaching based on the above post. ~LJB

Leckey's "Tenmile country & its Pioneer Families", Waynewburg Republican Vol. 4, pp. 32-38, says: "There is some confus ion concerning Henry VanMeter and his Martha, who purchased land on which he settled in 1769 when he brought his famil y to the Tenmile Country with the Swans, Hughs, Hillers, and O'Neils. This was the party led by Thomas Gist, which sett led on lands sold by the Indian trader John Owens of Fort Pitt in 1757 to Abraham Teagarden of Frederick Co., MD. It wa s the land on which John Swan and Henry VanMeter each built a fort on separate branches of a run variously known as Eno ch's Run, Swan's Run and Pumpkin Run.

"His family were members of the Goshen Baptist Church which had been established at Garrard's Fort by Jacob's family. H e took an active part in the affairs of his community. He became one of the first Commissioners of the new Washington C ounty, served one term as an Associate Judge, and then when Greene County was formed, was serving as County Treasurer w hen he died in 1802. During the Revolution he maintained a fort at his residence on Swan's Run. He is buried on the hil l above the house as is his wife and probably his son Jesse, but no markers remain."

Henry was the son of John (jan) van Meter and his wife Margaret Molenaar/Miller. He was born circa 1720. Henry married miss Martha Moore: one of nine children born to George Moore, Sr and his wife, Elizabeth Lucas. Henry and Martha celebrated their wedding in 1743 in Prince George's County, Maryland. They had thirteen children. Henry moved with his wife and children to Pennsylvania in 1769.

WHO ARE THE PARENTS OF HENRY WHO MARRIED MARTHA MOORE?

1. Henry (1717-1793) and Eva Pyle?

Smyth, the standard authority on the Van Metre’s lists him as Henry and Eva’s son, but their Henry Jr. was born about 1742 and this Henry married in about 1743.

2. Joost (1659-1710) and Sarah Du Bois?

Their Henrick married Mary Fetters in 1738 and Hannah Bartlett in 1752. Then he died in 1759 almost 10 years before this Henry’s last child was born. So they aren’t the same person.

3. Jan ”John” (1683-1745) & Margaret?

Their Henry married Eva Pyle in 1736 and Hannah Pyle in 1756. Sarah died in 1731. She could have given birth to Henry in that period of time, although he would have been a bit young to have married in 1743. However Henrick is rumored to have been married four times so perhaps Sarah wasn’t his first wife.

6. Abraham (1700-?) & Eliza?

Joost and Sarah Du Bois had a fourth son named Abraham born in 1700. No evidenceexists for this Abraham. I guess this is possible.
