EATON. A mistake has been made and repeated in regards to the John Lovering part of Mary Eaton's career. John (1) Lovering held land up the Piscataqua, near Salmon Falls, (Wentworth Gene.) on the N. H. side. His wife's name was Esther, and he had at least one son named John. John (1) was drowned in 1668. His son was bound out to Abraham Tilton by the stepfather, Ezekiel Knight, with consent of mother Esther. Esther died Jan. 21), 1675. Abraham Tilton moved to Ipswich and brought John (2) Lovering up to be a carpenter, like himself. John (2) sold the land his father got on a grant, to Thomas Abbott, and settled in Ipswich, marrying Hannah Kilham March 1, 1G86; he was then called John Loverell of the Piscataqua. After Esther Lovering, second wife of Ezekiel Knight, died, he married for third wife, Mary Eaton, widow of Valentine Hill, and she died April 24, 1708.

Esther ________ married first John Lovering, Sr. It is not known with any certainty as to when or where she was born, nor what was her maiden surname; but Eaton and Hill have been eliminated through extensive research. However, it is dubious that she was born in Wells, York County, Maine in the year 1641. The earliest settler was the Rev John Wheelwright in late 1641 from Exeter, Rockingham County, New Hampshire; with many of his congregation arriving in 1642. [Rev John Wheelwright witnessed the signing of a deed transfer in the town of Wells by Ezekiel Knight and his first wife Ann in 1645].
Esther/Hester ________ Lovering had at least two children by her first husband, John Lovering, Sr; Mary in 1661 and John Lovering, Jr in 1663. Her husband, John Lovering, Sr, died in Jul 1668, and Esther married second, Ezekiel Knight, [Sr], between 1 Oct 1668 and 4 Apr 1672, and became his third wife. Esther _______ Lovering Knight had died by 29 Jun 1675, when Ezekiel Knight went back to court to be compensated from the estate of John Lovering, Sr, for the maintenance of John Lovering, Sr's children, "from ye time of his marrying Hester Loverin his widdow untill ye time they weere putt out". The Court allowed him all the "movables", but reserved the house, land and the collection of rentals to be for the use of the children. At the same time, the Court appointed Capt John Wincoll guardian of the children, and permitted him to dispose of the eldest daughter, either by putting her out or continuing of her with Mr Knight, as may be best for the child's good. Ezekiel Knight and Esther ______ Lovering had no children from this marriage--Robert H Lovering
