Hezekiah Boughton and his family were residents of Old Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and Jared Boughton, his son, with his wife continued to make their home there for some time after their marriage. In spring 1788, having heard of the fertile country of the Genesee, he and his brother Hezekiah started on an exploring expedition in search of a new home. they went first to Chenango, where Charles Stone, father-in-law of Jared, had previously bought a plot of land.
