A Brief History

Hezekiah Boughton Sr, son of Eleazer Boughton, Sr. I, was born in Norwalk, Ct, November 2, 1725, married at Stanford, Ct October 12, 1749 to Abigail Penoyer, daughter of Samuel and Theophilia Sellect Penoyer. In 1788 Phelps and Company of New England purchased large tracts of land in Western New York from the Indians. Enos Boughton, son of Hezekiah, worked for the company. He and his brother, Hezekiah Jr., having heard about the fertility of the Genesee country, left New England to explore the region. They returned home and in the spring of 1789, Enos and his brother, Jared visited the area. That fall, Enos Boughton obtained a purchase contract for the future town of Victor, New York, for 20 cents per acre. He was able to sell more than two thirds of the land. His father, Hezekiah Boughton Sr. paid for the remaining, including what became known as Boughton Hill. Hezekiah then gave land to his married children and for himself, built a log cabin. He laid out a village square with a school house as well as a burial ground., New England style, Containing two acres, many of the town’s early pioneers have been laid to rest in this historic cemetery. First burials are Hezekiah Boughton Sr, died 1798 and his wife, Abigail Penoyer, died 1813, and their sons, Hezekaiah Jr, Jared, and Enos.
On January 24th, 1880 a meeting was held in the one room schoolhouse for the purpose of organizing a rural cemetery association. The petition stated that the said association, shall, in the future, be referred to as “The Boughton Hill Cemetery Association.” It shall be managed by six trustees, duly elected by ballot.”
