GEDCOM Note
Marion Mangold says that the formal family photograph taken during World War II (see multimedia: Thomas) just before her "father (Hubert) left to join up. John was already in uniform and Hubert had virtually outgrown his suit - he was only 18 or 19 years old here and had no option but to wear it for this sitting. Not knowing if their sons would come back they thought it a good idea to have a last family portrait taken. This has since been a favourite of ours as a family and I have a framed copy hanging on my bedroom wall. My grandmother felt it was her duty as wife of the local Member of Parliament to encourage her sons to sign up as she needed to set an example and thereby encourage others."
GEDCOM Note
Grew up on the farms Glen Ovis and Signal Hill, situated in the Great Fish River Valley, 36 miles north of Grahamstown, where they farmed with Merino sheep, Blackhead Persians, Holstein cattle, Arabian horses and ostriches.
