The eldest son of Joseph Sr. & Jean Warthen Dunklin. His parents emigrated to America on a ship from London, England. Joseph Sr. & Jean Warthen married in Charleston, South Carolina when they arrived. They located on Four Holes Swamp in Berkley County, S.C.
Joesph Jr. served with General Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox," & General Horry for the greater part of the Revoluntionary War. ( by Ethel Hastings Scruggs Dunklin, wife of William Wathin Dunklin of Laplante & Dunklin Ptg. Co., New York, NY. DAR #145,482) After his father & mother died at the close of the war, he moved with his brothers & sisters to Greenville County, South Carolina on the Reedy River in 1785. The Dunklin family picked Greenville County because the Sullivan(t)s on their trading trips to Charleston, S.C. stayed with the Dunklin family of Four Holes Swamp. The Sullivan(t)s told them of the new purchase of rich & healthy lands in Greenville County & all the family moved up to Dunklin Township, Greenville County, S.C.
