- When, at her Maraisburg school, Iris was asked where she was born, she records herself as replying, "I was born in the desert... He [the headmaster] said what desert. I said I don't know what desert." She had no memory of Kenhardt because she was only seventeen months old when her father was transferred to East London in March 1892. There he had Iris and her younger brother Charles (who had been born on 25 September 1891 "in a tent in a dust storm in the desert" while his father was away at court in O'okiep) christened in St John's Anglican church, on 7 May 1892.16 The little girl was baptised Henrietta (for her maternal grandmother) Emily (for her paternal grandmother) Iris, and her godparents included Gertrude Ackermann, probably her mother's sister.
