About Irma Stern

1900 – Irma’s father was interned in a concentration camp by the British during the Anglo-Boer War . Irma and her brother, Rudi were taken to Cape Town by their mother. After the war the family returned to Germany.

1913 – She studies art in Germany at the Weimar Academy.

1914 – Irma studies at the Levin-Funcke Studio

1917 – She, together with Max Pechstein starts the Novembergruppe. Her work is associated with the German Expressionist painters of this period.

1919 – Stern holds her first exhibition in Berlin.

1920 – She returns to Cape Town with her family.

1922 – Irma holds her first solo exhibition in South Africa at Ashbey’s Art Gallery in Cape Town. The public and critics did not respond favorably and the police were even called in to investigate charges of immortality.

1923 - 1924 She returns to Europe and takes part in various exhibitions.

1925 – She holds her next solo exhibition at Ashbey’s Art Gallery in Cape Town. This time round the critics and the public react more favourably to her work.

1926 – Irma marries Dr. Johannes Prinz, her former tutor. He subsequently becomes professor of German at the University of Cape Town.

1927 – She acquires the Firs (now the Irma Stern Museum)

1930 and 1952 – She travels to Madeira.

1934 – Irma Stern and Johannes Prinz gets divorced.

1937 and 1938 – Stern travels to Dakar, Senegal.

1939 and 1945 – Irma travels to Zanzibar.

1942 and 1955 – She travels to Congo.

1943 – She publishes her illustrated journal Congo.

1946 – Stern travels to Central Africa.

1948 – Irma publishes her illustrated journal Zanzibar.

By the mid 1940’s Irma was considered an established artist and took part in exhibitions all over South Africa and Europe until 1965.

1960 – She travels to Spain.

1963 – Irma Stern travels to France.

These expeditions resulted in a wealth of artistic creativity and energy.

1971 – The Irma Stern Museum is established in the house where Irma lived for almost 40 years.

Irma Stern is considered one of South Africa’s most important artist and achieved both national and international acclaim during her lifetime. Her works sold for record prices of between R1.7 million in 2000 at Sotheby’s in Johannesburg to R34 million for a painting in 2011 at Bonham’s in London.
