Israel Baldwin, son of Samuel Baldwin and Sarah Kirby, was born in Milford, Conn., Oct. 31,1718; he 1st married HANNAH CHATTERTON, of New Haven, Conn., on Oct. 17,1743, of "Amitie" Parish and 2nd married Hannah Gunn, Oct. 9, 1751. He had ear-mark in New Haven, Jan. 23,1743/44. He removed to New Milford, where he, with his brothers, inherited his father's lands. He was Deacon in the "Strict Congregational," or "Separatist" Church. He d. July 1,1797, in his 79th year. His widow Hannah d. Dec. 27,1812, aged 90. His epitaph reads: "Life makes the soul dependent on the dust; Death gives her wings. To mount above the spheres; Feeble nature may drop a tear, While reason and religion, better taught, Congratulate the dead, and crown the tomb With wreath triumphant."[3]
