About Israel Robinson

Israel was a lineal descendant (great grandson) of Reverend John Robinson, pastor of the 1620 Mayflower Pilgrims at Leiden, Netherlands, and his wife Bridget White.

Israel, the 3rd and last child as well as eldest son of Windham settler Peter Robinson, Sr. by first wife Mary Manter, b. Mar. 16, 1694/5 at Tisbury on Martha's Vineyard, Mass. The 1925 Robinson Genealogy claims he was born on "March 16, 1695," but this is where understanding the Latin phrase "Ætatis suæ" becomes important.

According to the printed Windham vital records: "Israel Robinson, d. Jan. 12, 1775, in the 80th y. of his age."

There is no record that Israel's gravestone, if he had one, was still extant in 1934 when Hale's Connecticut Cemetery database was compiled. However, both of his wives and at least one son have grave stones at the Windham Center Cemetery at Windham. Based solely on the phrase "in the 80th year of his age," on the day that Israel died he was 79 years old and Ætatis suæ 80 years. This means that he was b. on or after Jan. 13, 1694/5 as the latter date is historically written in reference to the modern calendar.

Unless an actual gravestone inscription is found, the memorialist believes the stated record of his birth in the Robinson Genealogy is misleading and that Israel Robinson was b. on Mar. 16, 1694/5 and d. Jan. 12, 1775, Æ 80. He obviously was not the twin of his brother Peter, Jr., b. Dec. 7, 1696.

Israel was twice married: 1) on May 12, 1724 to Sarah Sabin, who d. May 4, 1737 at Windham. Israel and Sarah had the following four children recorded at Windham:

• i. Elisha Robinson, b. Feb. 5, 1724/5; "partnered" with Ann Squire(s) at Willington, Conn., and had a son Elisha b. of record at Windham May 30, 1745 who perhaps died young; m. 2) Thankful --- and had nine children of record at Willington, the eldest, son Israel, stated to have been born at Dutchess County, NY Jan. 29, 1748/9.

• ii. Daniel Robinson, b. Jan. 18 (bapt. Jan. 28), 1732/3; m. Mar. 29, 1758 at Windham, Mary Flint.

• iii. Eleazer Robinson, b. July 8 (bapt. Aug. 4), 1734; no further certain record.

• iv. Abigail Robinson, b. Feb. 22 (bapt. Mar. 6), 1736/7; m. Apr. 19, 1762 at Windham, Silas Flint.

In addition, there may have been one or more unrecorded children by 1st wife Sarah between sons Elisha and Daniel, but no record can be found that hints that there were additional children.

Israel Robinson married 2) Feb. 21, 1748/9 Deborah Chapman, who d. testate Oct. 19, 1793 at Windham, Conn. Second wife Deborah was b. Feb. 15, 1706/7 at East Haddam, Conn. In their marriage record at Windham, the term "Mrs" did not mean she was a previously married woman, rather it meant Mistress Deborah, the unmarried dau. of Robert and Mary Chapman of East Haddam. Israel and Deborah had one child:

• v. Samuel, b. June 3, 1750; m. Apr. 13, 1773 at Windham, Sarah Scott.
