A letter, dated 2 Jan 1868, to John BIRD of Hightown, VA. from Jesse BIRD of Plattsburg, Clinton Co., MO., reads in part as follows:

"Mr. John BIRD, my dear Cousin: --- I am the same Jesse BIRD who received my first lessons from Jacob HARDWAY at the school house near Jacob HEAVENER's (Monterey, VA.). My father's name was Jacob, and all your statements about the family are substantially correct. You omit one thing, the notice of my going to school. You will remember that you taught at the same place, and that I went to your school in the summer of 1819, just before we left Virginia. I remember you well.
"Now for the information you desire of the other members of the family. My father died in the summer of 1821. My mother died in Nov. 1856. John and Henry reside near Farmington, Ill. My brother Jacob died in Andrew County, Mo. in 1850. Adam lives in Hardin Co., Ky., near Elizabethtown, Joseph lives in Mead Co., Ky. My sister Sally died about 1844, and Polly is still living in Hardin Co., Ky.
"So you see we are a scattered flock of Birds. If I live I shall be 59 the 24th of next May. I have been a Methodist preacher 38 years, and I am now in the 15th year of my itinerant life. Four years I belonged to the Kentucky Conference and a little over ten years in the Missouri Conference.
"--- I have eight living children. One son died in his 20th year ---. My youngest boy Jesse is in his 18th year. My two oldest daughters are married well and living in Ky. My youngest daughter is teaching in the Marvin Institute, Chillicothe, Mo. ---.
"I suppose you read the BALTIMORE EPISCOPAL METHODIST, as you saw my name in it. --- When you write again please give me some information about Uncle Valentine's Estate. Yours Truly, Jesse BIRD."
Note: Jesse BIRD (1809-1885), the author of the above letter was the son of Jacob and Margaret (WADE) BIRD. John Bird, the recipient's, mother was a HARDWAY. The original of this letter was in the possession of Mrs. Norma Smith, 401 Ascot Drive, Park Ridge, Ill. 60068 in 1958.
