About Jacob Brouwer

Baptism

1684 Nov 30; Jacob Brower, Annetje Bogardus; Jacob; Josiah Dreetse (Dratse), Aaltie Browers. Flatbush DRC Baptisms 1677-1754

Jacob Brouwer was born circa 1655 at Gowanus, Long Island, the date being that what is generally accepted, however, he may have been born a bit earlier. As Jacob, he was named for his maternal grandfather, which would traditionally imply that he was second son born to his parents. If this were the case, Jacob may have been born in 1647 or 1648. He married Annetje Bogardus, daughter of Willem Bogardus and Wynnetje Sybrants, at Brooklyn, Kings Co., Long Island, New York, on 29 January 1682 (banns 7 Jan 1682, Flatbush; 8 Jan 1682, New York).4,5 Jacob Brouwer died before 20 December 1706; when his wife, "Annitie Brower," appears on the Brooklyn town assessment list with 26 acres.6 Also known as Jacobus Brouwer.5 Also known as Jakop Brouwer.7 Named for his maternal grandfather Jacob Verdon, Jacob is said to have been born ca. 1655 at Gowanus (no baptism record has been found), Jacob appears to have lived his entire life at Gowanus and was deceased by Dec. 1706. He married Annetje Bogardus, the granddaughter of Dom. Everardus Bogardus and his wife, the famous Anneke Jans, whose supossed fortune in Manhattan property has led many Brouwer descendants and want-to-be descendants to claim and publish inaccurate and false lines of ancestry.

Son of Pieter Brouwer and Petronella Uldrickse Kleyn.

Jacob is treated by Hoffman in "Brouwer Beginnings" (TAG 23:202) he writes, "Although some authorities identify him as the Jacob Brouwer who settled at the Raritan, the evidence indicates that he is the Jacob Brouwer who married at Albany, 6 Apr 1717, Maria Bovy. Not only his sister married there Nicholas Bovy, but Jacob's first son was named Petrus and his second daughter Nelletje, the names of Jacob's father and mother. This couple had eleven children baptised at Albany. Another son, Nicholas, whose baptism was not recorded has to be added to this. Their descendants remained at Albany and some of these, in the later generations, settled at Schaghticoke."
