Biography

He was the youngest brother, Jacob Clodfelter, however, whose estate inventory and sale leave little doubt that he had been heavily involved in woodworking. He died on 1 February 1837, and his estate inventory included over 10,000 feet of plank and scantling (at least 700 feet of walnut plank) and the following items:

5 axes about 200 hogshead and barrel staves 1 mill saw 1 hand vice 500 shingles 2 jointers 3 hammers 8 files 8 augers 1 brace and bits 1 turning lathe 1 set turning chisels 2 iron wedges 1 jack screw 1 jack plane 1 tool chest 12 chisels, 1 froe 2 fore planes 2 cooper jointers 1 hand jointer 2 hand saws 1 tenon saw 1 bow saw 1 compass saw 1 drawing knife 1 large compass 1 set tongue and grooving planes 2 cross-cut saws 1 broad ax 6 beading planes 3 gouges 1 gauging rod 4 gun stocks.

This extensive inventory establishes that Jacob Clodfelter was making barrels, creating gunstocks, building structures, fashioning furniture, and—as Ruth Little hypothesizes—carving.

One of the purchasers at Jacob Clodfelter’s sale was an identified Swisegood school cabinetmaker, Jonathan Long, then age thirty-three, who purchased the turning chisels and all the walnut plank.
