About Jacob Dewey (J.D.) Gortatowsky
Born in Albany, Ga. in 1855, Jake Gortatowsky would rise from a young reporter for the Albany Herald to the highest levels of American business and join the upper levels of the American celebrity class. By the time he was 25, he was managing editor of the Atlanta Constitution. He became head of King Features and ultimately the boss of the Hearst media empire, working for the largest and most powerful newspaperman of the 20th Century, William Randolph Hearst. He built King Features into the largest syndicated network in the world circulating in over 50 foreign countries. He took over duties as general manager of Hearst Newspapers, and at the time of his death in 1964 was chairman of the board of Hearst Consolidated Publications. (This information taken from an article published in the Albany Herald by Ed Lightsey, senior correspondent for Georgia Trend Magazine. The article was in conjunction with an interview with Terese Davis Cohn niece of Jacob D. Gortatowsky.)
