About Rev. James Chastain
Peter, Jr. was born in the Virginia Colony about 1707. Peter is the English form of the French Pierre. He was the son of Pierre and his second wife, Anne Soblet. Pierre's first wife died shortly after arriving in the new world. Peter inherited his father's home and 111 acres of land in 1728. However, Peter mortgaged the property the next year to cover some debts and subsequently deeded the land to the mortgager. Later, he owned a different tract of 400 acres. Peter apparently lived his entire life in Virginia.

His last child was born in 1753, so he lived until at least then.

I think there may be a MISSING Pierre Chastain here- there should be another generation, presumably with the same name. There is a 25-year age gap between this man and his supposed wife, and he was supposedly 49 when his son was born. This does not compute.
Pierre Jr, evidently had quite a gambling problem. He once lost his house gambling.

GEDCOM Note
Due lack of accurate records of marriage, it is more than likely that some of these children are of the first marriage and some from the second. [Chastian.FTW]
CHASTEEN GENEALOGY AND FAMILY HISTORY by Naomi Ruth Jackson Chasteen, Gregath Co., 1987 P.83
1783 - He was a citizen of North Carolina where he received a land grant of 300 acres on Indian Camp Creek, in the part of North Carolina that became Sullivan County, TN Source: "North Carolina Land Grants in Tennessee 1778-1791", page 26, compiled by Cartwright and Gardiner. 1785-86 - he obtained Land Grants of 135 acres, 547 acres, & 154 acres in Greenville County, 96th District,k South Carolina, on the South Tyger River. 1790 - he bought land in Pendleton District, South Carolina in the French Broad River Valley. 1790 census - 96th District, Pendleton Co. The only record of him to be found in that state was in Bedford Co., VA in the 1770's. Rev. James left Virginia about 1780, was probably in what is now Eastern Tennessee for a short while and was in SC in 1784 where he was granted land in that year. Rev. James seems to have married ca. 1773 to his first wife whose name in unknown. Rev. James and his first wife had what appears to have been 6 sons and 2 daughters. I can only be sure of the names of 2 of the sons (James Jr. and Peter) and do not know the names of the daughters. In 1790 Rev. James was in Pendleton Dist., SC in the part which is now Anderson Co. James Chastain then moved into Greenville Co., SC about 1793. About 1799 moved into what is now Transylvania Co., NC. He remained in this area near to what is now Brevard NC until shortly after 1810 when he returned to SC. James can be found on the 1800 and 1810 census of Buncombe Co., NC, which part is now Transylvania Co. Rev. James first wife had died by 1810 and he then married a Marian____. Marian is also sometimes rendered as "Mary Ann." She seems to have been born Ca. 1775 in Va. I believe James married Marian in then Buncombe Co., NC and that the two of them moved back into Greenville Co., SC about 1811 since Renny was b. 1813. Rev. James apparently died early in 1820 and at that time he and Marian were living in souther Greenville Co., SC near the small community of Fork Shoal. Marian appears on the 1820 census of Greenville Co., SC as Marian Chastein (sic) as a female over 45 years with 2 small sons of 0-10 years. These two small boys would be Renney b. 1813 and Benjamin b. 1815. In 1830 Marian appears to have been living in the home of Benjamin E. and his new wife. (Benjamin E. married at age 14 according to a newspaper item from 1829.) I think that Marian was the "Mary Ann Chastain" who moved her church letter from Fork Shoals Baptist Church in 1833 and that she moved along with son Renny into Anderson Co., SC and seemingly died there between 1840 and 1850. I think she is the older femaile in the house with son Renny in 1840.
