PENSION PAPERS MRS. JAMES F. (AMANDA DICKENSON) MCKEE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, STATE OF Indiana COUNTY OF Owen SCT: BE IT KNOWN, That on this day, before me the undersigned, Judge of Common Pleas in and for said county duly authorized by Law to administer oaths for General purposes, personally appeared Mrs. Amanda McKee aged 34 years, a resident of Owen county, of State of Indiana to me well known, and being first duly sworn, does on her oath make the following statement, viz: "I, the undersigned above named and described, state that I am widow of James McKee now deceased, and who in his lifetime was engaged in military service of the United States in the war against the so-called Confederate States, in the years 1861-62, &c.; and was a private in Captain Wilson's (B) company, Colonel Alexanders (59th) Regiment of Volunteers of the troops of the State of Indiana in the service aforesaid. N> B. My said husband died on the 14, day of October in the year 1862 at (or near) a place called Jefferson Barracks Hospital Missouri by reason of Dysenteria received or contracted by him in the line of his duty in the service aforesaid. Refer to rolls of said Company, Refer also to such other evidence (if any) as my attorney herein below named may file in support hereof. I was married to said James McKee on the 23rd day of April 1848 in Owen county, in the state of Indiana by one Emsley Hale a Justice of Peace and my name before I was so married was Amanda Dickinson. I have never married again since the death of my husband, the said James McKee but remain his widow.

I make this declaration for the purpose of applying for the benefit any act or acts or laws of the United States granting widows pensions which may apply to the facts of my case, and I hereby, with full power of substitution, irrevocable by me appoint Basil Meek of Owen my attorney in this behalf. My post-office address is Arney Post Office Indiana The name of state "Missouri" interlined above before signing - also in date of marriage the figure "9" was erased & figure "8" inserted before signing This 27 day of October 1862. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, STATE OF Indiana COUNTY OF Owen SCT: The statement of Eliza Ann Tally aged 29 years, a resident of Owen county, of the State of Indiana and of Frances Johnson aged 40 years, a resident of Owen county, of the Sate of Indiana. We, the undersigned, above named and described, do one our oaths say that we were well and intimately acqauineted with the above named James McKee who was engaged in the military service of the United States in the war against the so-called Confederate States, as is above set forth, viz: We know of his going into the service - We saw letters from him while in the service written to his wife We were also well acquainted with his wife, Mrs. Amanda McKee and during the lifetime of said James McKee and up to the time of his death, they lived together as husband and wife, and were reputed so to be among their neighbors and acquaintances, and according to what we have always heard and believed, and never heard disputed, the said parties were lawfully married about fourteen years ago, and the name of said Amanda McKee before they were so married was Amanda Dickinson. The said James McKee died on the 14 day of October in the year 1862 at (or near) a place called Jefferson Barracks Hospital Missouri and at his death said Mrs. Amanda McKee his widow, and since then we have known her well and intimately as such, and she has not married again since his death, but remains his widow, and she is know to us as having signed the foregoing declaration, and she has acknowledged the same in out presence; and we therefore certify that she is the identical person whom she therein represents herself to be, and that she is now a widow and that she resides as stated in said declaration.

The cause of death of said James McKee was disease of Dysentary received or contracted by him in the line of his duty in the service aforesaid, as we have heard and believe, and doubt not. viz: We saw letters from Hospital announcing his death and the said Eliza Ann Tally saw his body which was brought home for burial and saw him buried in Owen county aforesaid - There can be no doubt of his death. State of Indiana, Owen County ss: Be it remembered that on this 28th day of August A D 1863 before me Clerk of the Circuit Court within and for the County and State aforesaid personally appeared Mrs. Amanda McKee to me well known, who being by me first duly sworn makes the following statement viz: I am the widow of James F. McKee now deceased who was a private in Co. B 59th regiment of Indiana Volunteers the identical person who heretofore made application for Pension as such widow, in which I omitted to give names and ages of the children of my deceased husband. I now state that the said James F. McKee left to survive him the following named children and them only of ages as follows: Mary, born February 17" 1849; Jane, born March 8, 1851; Eveline born August 5, 1852 and Benjamin F. born April 11th 1860 - That they live with me in said county And State of Indiana - My Post Office address is Arney owen county, Indiana I make this statement as supplemental to my original application. - Amanda McKee

Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D.C., Aug. 2nd, 1865 Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt from your Office of application for Pension No. 5.464, and to return it herewith, with such information as is furnished by the files of this office. It appears from the Rolls on file in this office, that James McKee was enrolled on the 1st day of Nov., 1861, at Bloomington in Co. "B" 59th Regiment of Ind. Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war, and mustered into service as a Private on the 11th day of February 1862, at Gosport Ind., in Co. "B", 59th Regiment of Ind. Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war. On the Muster Roll of Co. "B" of that Regiment, for the months of September to October 1862, he is reported "Died at Hospital Jefferson Barracks Mo. Oct. 14th 1862" Cause of death not stated name borne on Co. Rolls as James F McKee The above named soldier is believed to be the one inquired for in the application. I am, Sir, very respectfully, Your obedient servant, ______, Breck, Assistant Adjutant General. The Commissioner of Pensions, Washington, D. C.

State of Indiana, County of Owen ss: Before me Joseph H. McKee, a Justice of the Peace in and for the county and State aforesaid. On this 27 day of December 1866 personally appeared Dr. ?A. J.? Minich, a resident of Owen county, Indiana well known to me, and whom I certify to be a physician and surgeon in good standing, and whom I certify to be respectable, and his words entitled to credit and being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following affidavit. That on the 5" day of August 1852, he attended on Mrs. Amanda McKee, while confined, and when and there at her residence in Owen county Indiana, she gave birth to a female child, which was called by its Parents Eveline McKee. Furthermore He swears that in the 11" day of April 1860, He was again called as the family physician, and delivered the said Amanda McKee of a male child who was afterwards called Benjamin F. McKee. That said Amanda McKee is the widow of James F. McKee Deceased who as a Private in Co. "b" of the 59" Regt Ind. Vols. That the said Amanda McKee and the said James F. McKee were living together as husband and wife at the time of the births as aforesaid, Eveline McKee & Benjamin F. McKee and __ so reputed; that he was personally, acquainted with the said James F. McKee deceased and the said Amanda McKee his widow having known them for many years, and was their family physician and that he ___ as aforesaid and has no interest directly or indirectly in the claim of said Amanda McKee for and Increase of Pension under any existing law of Congress, nor is interested in its prosecution. Subscribed and Sworn to before me and I certify that I have no interest whatever in the prosecution of the claim Amanda McKee for increase of Pension Witness my hand and seal the day and year first above written and I futher certify, that the following erasures and interlineations_ we made before signing the word "Greene" crossed, and "Owen" inserted in Captain, and the words "Stephen H. Lockwood Notary Public"erased in first line and "Joseph H. McKee Justice of the Peace inserted and the word "October" erased in second line and "December" inserted and the word "Official" erased in the fourth line of this certificate all the other erasures and interlineations in the body of the affidavit, which were done before acknowledged Witness my hand seal this day of December 1866

McKee Esq., before whom the within instrument was acknowledged, and whose certificate of acknowledgment appears thereto, signed in his own proper handwriting, was at the date thereof a Justice of the Peace in and for said county, duly commissioned and qualified, and as such full faith and credit are due all his acts. McKee Justice of the Peace for and in the county and state aforesaid, personally appeared Mrs. Mary Dickinson of Greene county, In. and Susannah Trent of Owen county Indiana, well known to me, and persons whom I certify to be respectable, and their words entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn by me according to law doth ___ oath make the following affidavit - That they were present at the family residence of James F. McKee Deceased, a Late Private in Co. "B" of the 59th Reg. Ind. Vols. in Owen county Indian to wit on the 8" day of March 1851 and the__ and then the said wife of James F. McKee towit Amanda McKee was delivered of a female child in the presence of these affiants, they having perfect cognigances of the same - that said child was afterwards called by its parents Jane McKee That the said parents towit James F. McKee and Amanda McKee were living together at the time of birth of said child, as husband and wife and were reputed that they were personally acquainted with the said James F. McKee and Amanda McKee having known them for fifteen years previous to the death of said James F. McKee, and lived near neighbors to them. That they reside as above stated and have no interest directly ot indirectly in the prosecution of the claim of Amanda McKee for an Increase of Pension under existing laws of the United States. Mary Dickinson Susannah Trent Subscribed and sworn to before, and I certify that the contents of the above affidavit was read and explained to the affiants before signing their names

Witness my hand and seal and I certify that the word "Greene" was erased in the coption of affidant, and the word Owen inserted, and the words :"October" and "Stephen H. Lockwood" were erased in the first line of affidavit, and the "December" and "Joseph H. McKee" inserted, and the date was written over the words "day of" and the word "Notary public" were erased in second line and the words Justice of the peace inserted, all of which was done before signing and authentication, and the word Official was erased in this certificate before authentication.
