It appears that James and his godfather, Thomas Frederick, were partners in land speculation in Prince George's County. By 1694 they were both listed on the Rent Rolls of Piscataway Hundred for 651 acres of land called "Aire".
In 1701 James and Frederick, both of Prince George County, purchased 600 acres, a part of a larger tract known as "Strife", for 15,000 pounds of tobacco. "Strife" was located in southern Prince George's County, south of Piscataway, on the main road from Piscataway to Port Tobacco. The southern part bordered on the Mattawoman Creek and Swamp and adjoined the land "Aire" already in their possession.
Thomas Frederick died in 1709 and bequeathed to his godsons James and Thomas Green, each 100 acres of "Strife" and to their mother, Mary Green, 200 acres of "Strife". To his wife, Mary, he bequeathed his personal estate, to pass at her death to Thomas, Jane, and Elizabeth Green.
It appears that James purchased the entire "Strife" plantation from his family members. Including "Strife", "Aire", he also purchased "Cowpen" and thus held over 1200 acres of land.
