A serious accident occurred yesterday afternoon, Monday, 2 April 1888, to Mr James H. Hill, Paisley, who is one of the leading members of committee in the promotion of the steeplechase meet which was arranged to take place at Houston, Renfrewshire, today. Mr Hill was riding round the course in order to see that all was in readiness and in proper order when his horse stopped short at one of the watercourses where there a wide leap. The refusal of the animal to take the leap caused Mr Hill's head to strike with violence the head of the animal, injuring him severely. The horse then crossed the obstruction, and Mr Hill slipped off and fell. He was carried to the mansion of Mr Harvey of Woodend, and Dr Lewis was summoned to his assistance. He was thereafter removed to the mansion at Clippens, the residence of Mr Scott, where he remained unconscious. The point to point races, under the auspices of the Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire Foxhunt, have in consequence been postponed.
Last night Tuesday, 3 April 1888, Mr. James H. Hill succumbed to the injuries he received while inspecting the above course on Monday, 2 April 1888. The event has caused profound regret among a large circle of admiring friends all over the county of Renfrew, besides Ayrshire, where he was well known among the members of the Eglinton Hunt. The deceased gentlemen never recovered consciousness, and passed away a few minutes after a consultation between Dr. Taylor, of Johnstone, and Professor Buchanan, of Glasgow.
The injuries received by Mr James H. Hill at Houston Steeplechase Course have proved fatal, Mr Hill having died on Tuesday night, 3 April 1888, from concussion and compression of the brain. Deceased was clerk to the committee promoting the steeplechase meet, and a well-known and respected member of the Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire Fox Hunt. He was about thirty-five years of age.
Mr James H. Hill, who was injured by being thrown from his horse while riding round the course in connection with the steeplechases at Houston, died last night, Tuesday, 3 April 1888. After the accident occurred Mr Hill was removed to Clippens House, the residence of Mr Scott, in an unconscious condition, and remained in that state till yesterday evening, when he died. The deceased, who was about thirty-five years of age, was a well-known Renfrewshire gentleman, and was a member of the late firm Messrs Carlisle, Sons, & Co., thread manufacturers, Paisley. Professor Buchanan, Glasgow, and Dr Fraser, Paisley, were present when Mr Hill expired.
