About James Horde
James Hord's father was Thomas Hord of Charlotte Co. Virginia. The identity of his mother is uncertain as DAR records indicate Thomas was married three times. James may have been born earlier than 1765 - the 1810 census entry for James Hord shows one male "45 yrs. or beyond" in the household. James Hord married Martha Puryear on November 14, 1803 in Mecklenburg Co. VA. They subsequently moved to Rutherford County, NC about 1820. The land they purchased from David Johnson was on both sides of Harris Creek in the Double Shoals area which became part of Cleveland County in 1841. The date of James' death is uncertain, but his son, Jesse, stated in a court deposition (1890 John E. & Susannah Hord Cabaniss estate file) that "Father died about 1824. Can't say exactly; about then." The burial place of James is likely here in the old Hord Cemetery off Robert Cornwell Rd. south of Lawndale, NC. This small family plot is listed in the 1939 WPA cemetery census as having 23 unmarked graves. Since James was the first of the Virginia Hords to settle in Cleveland Co., this is the most likely burial site.
James and Martha Puryear Hord had five sons and two daughters. They were:
Richard T. Hord, b. 1806; m. 1st, Margaret Thompson; m. 2nd, Mahaley Ledford Susanna R. Hord, b. 1807; m. John E. Cabaniss James W.
