About Thomas Hord

Thomas Hord lived in Virginia in the 18th century. An analysis of "The Genealogy of the Hord Family," compiled by Robert Hord in 1838 and transcribed by Rev. Arnold Harris Hord in 1914, results with the most reasonable conclusion - given the time frame and supporting evidence - the parents of this Thomas Hord were John Hord, II and Sarah Redd. Thomas Hord was probably born in the 1740s. Although his parentage and birth date are uncertain, a Charlotte Co. VA Chancery Court document records his death as Dec. of 1795. This same document states Thomas owned land in both Charlotte County and Mecklenburg County, VA. He owned 600 acres along Cargill Creek and another 300 acres in an area known then as Pool's Tract.

A DAR entry (#A058362) records his rank as "patriotic service". He was probably too old to serve in the battlefields by the time of the revolution. This record also indicates Thomas may have married three times. The second and third wives were Mary Cargill and Mary Camp. Both of these women are believed to have been widowed, of Daniel Cargill and John Camp, respectively. "The Marriages of Mecklenburg County (VA), 1765-1810," records the marriage of Thomas Hord to Mary Camp on 26 Dec. 1785. This same document also records the marriages of two of Thomas's sons. Jesse Hord married Mary C. Erskine on 12 Feb. 1798; James Hord married Martha Puryear on 14 Nov. 1803.

The nine children of Thomas Hord were listed in his will (filed in Mecklenburg Co. VA) in the following order: Edmond Hord (m. Mary "Polly" Whitlow, 1802) James Hord (m. Martha Puryear, 1803) Jesse Hord (m. Mary Erskine, 1798) Elizabeth "Betsy" Hord (m. Henry Chandler) Fanny Hord (m. Wagstaff Maynard, 1792), Thomas Hord, Jr. John Hord (m. Martha Stokes Neal, 1806) William Hord Susannah Hord (m. Robert Saunders) The first wife of Thomas (name unknown at this writing) is believed to be the mother of eight of Thomas' nine children. Mary Cargill was the mother of Susannah.

The Chancery Court document states that two of Thomas' sons, Edmund and Jesse, left Virginia for the "western country." Later records indicate Edmund relocated to Bedford Co. Tennessee. Two other sons, John and James, left Virginia for North Carolina. DAR records suggest John moved first to Rutherford Co. NC (abt. 1819), then later to Obion Co. TN. Estate files record the family of James living in the Harris Creek area of Rutherford Co., which became part of Cleveland Co. NC when it formed in 1841.

Note: There are alternate surname spellings of "Hord." Hoard, Hoord, Horde, and Hore were common in early records. According to the 1838 Robert Hord manuscript, some descendants believe the first Hord in America changed the spelling of his name from John Howard to John Hord. Subsequent analysis discredits this idea.
