James Larimer married a Miss Ascenath Cornwell in Fairfield County, Ohio. In the year 1835 they moved west with his brother Moses to Elkhart County, Indiana. Part of the land they settled upon he sold to his brother-in-law, Abel Everitt Work in the year 1842.
James was a large strong man and was considered one of the best "Axe" men in that county, he was called the "Comer man" in raising a log building, he would also enter into wood chopping contests to see who could reach the heart of a tree first. In other words James Larimer was an expert rail splitter, all of the fences were made of split rails in that day.
James lost his life in an accident in the year 1846, while returning home one December night from Middlebury, Indiana the ground was frozen, the horse he was riding stumbled and fell, he was thrown striking his head, he died instantly. The accident occured near the Leander Foster farm south of Middlebury, Indiana.
