About James (John) Martin

Biography

James Martin was born in 1780 in the Cherokee Nation (East). He was the son of General Joseph Martin and Betsy Ward, a Cherokee woman. [1] In 1799 the Moravian missionaries recorded meeting him:

"Martin, son of General Martin with whom Br. Schneider stayed formerly in Chittiko, arrived today. We asked him if he remembers the visit of Br. Schneider, sixteen years ago? He said no, that he was born in Chittiko but was only nineteen years old now, and was therefore very young at the time. He told us that his father was now in Henry County, Virginia, and that his mother was living in Wakhowee on the Hiwassee River." [2]
They also mentioned him in 1803, saying at one point that he had been seriously injured in a fall from a horse. [3] James was listed as a quartermaster in Gideon Morgan's Cherokee regiment in the War of 1812 where he was wounded. [4] An 1822 letter from Indian Agent Return Meigs to the Secretary of War also described him:

He is a Cherokee of the half-blood. His father was General Joseph Martin of Virginia. He has had an education in Virginia under the eye of his father & has some taste for literature. He reads and writes well. He is now preparing for settlement on the Arkansas River at his own expense... [5]
It appears that he did not actually move (or went west and returned) since James Martin appears alone on the 1835 Census, living on Chestoa Creek in Tennessee. [6]

He married (wife unknown) and fathered a daughter named Gu-yu-ne-gu. She is named in a bounty land claim for her father's service, filed after his death.[7] James died in Going Snake District, Indian Territory, in 1847.
