About James Cue Monteith

James Monteith Jnr was in the 1st Battalion of The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) at the front near Arras, France when he was wounded by gunshot and taken to No.3 Stationary Hospital Rouen, dying there after about 16 hours. Buried in Block P, Plot l, Grave 2A in St. Sever cemetery extension, Rouen, France. James Monteith Snr and Bessie Wadham were married while moored in Roebuck Bay off Broome, Western Australia. James was in Broome already having sailed to Australia on board the yacht Sunbeam with Gilbert Sackville (future Earl De La Warr). Bessie Wadham sailed out to Australia on her own to Fremantle, then caught the ship SS Australind to sail to Broome to be with James. They were then married on board ship by the captain before Bessie disembarked. James was sent by the Westem Australian government to treat the gold miners on the newly opened gold fields at Cue. James and Bessie had some of their children in Australia but the rest were born after the family returned to England in 1895, settling in Dobcross near Oldham where James set up his practice.
