His Last Will and Testament

James Muirhead of Lauchope, here treated, identified as elder of Lauchope, made his last will and testament at his house of Lauchope on 25 September 1622. The witnesses present were John Hamilton, Mr Thomas Muirhead, Minister at Cambusnethan, James Muirhead in Belshall, and Mr. James Muirhead.

James Muirhead, elder of Lauchope, nominated and appointed his eldest son James, identified as James Murehead, younger of Lauchope, to be his only executer and intromitter. At the time of his death the elder James owed £333. 6s.8d to another son, Mr. Thomas Muirhead, presumed to be the Minister at Cambusnethan who witnessed the testament. Mr. James Muirhead acted himself as cautioner for James Muirhead, younger of Lauchope, and confirmation was granted to the young laird on 15 March 1623. Marriage

James Muirhead of Lauchop, here treated, married Elizabeth Houston who was the daughter and heir apparent of Patrick Houston of Craigton Her father gave her his lands of Craigton, Thomebowie and Carnieddan, and she and her husband had a charter of confirmation for them under the Great Seal of Scotland on 31 May 1597. 26 March 1577: Charter by which James Mureheid of Lauchope confirms that he has given an annualrent of twenty merks, secured upon his ten merk land of old extent of Lauchope, to Thomas Hamilton in Bartramschottis and Katherine Baillie his spouse. His charter was issued at Lauchope and was witnessed by James Mureheid in Schawfute and James Mureheid, son of James Mureheid of Lauchope. Thomas Hamilton and his wife gad a charter of confirmation under the Great Seal of Scotland on 10 September 1579. RMS 1546-80: charter number 2899

James Fynlaye in Lochtwod (the procuratory being subscribed for her by notaries, at Lauchop, on 19 November), resigned in favour of Claud Murheid, son of James Murheid of Lauchop (1) a back tenement, with houses built thereon, on each side of the close, with yard adjacent, and pertinents, lying t.c, on the west side of the street leading from the metropolitan church to the market cross, between the lands of John Scot and q. Robert Layng on the north, and of q. John Wyse on the south, the fore tenement on the east, and the yard of q. Gavin Broun on the west; and (2) a barn, with yard and pertinents, lying t.c., on the south side of the street beyond (trans) the bridge of Gallogaibume, between the lands of George Lyone on the east and of q.
