Lived for thirteen years in the service of the late Countys Dowager of Beetive, as landsteward and gardener at Summerhill in the County of Meath, until her Ladyships death
Travelled to South Africa with the Parker party on the East India ship as part of the British Government Settler Scheme. The ship departed from Cork on the 12th February 1820, arriving in Simon's Bay on the 1st May 1820.

James and Sarah emigrated to South Africa in 1820 on the ship "East Indian" as members of Parker's party Irish group. As mentioned in his son, Richard Armstrong Murray's will (see IFB: Reminiscences) he had a brother Alexander Murray, married to Hannah, both of Clapham, Surrey, both of whom appear to have died in the late 1830s. Mary Jane's death notice gives George Murray. James went to Ireland as a young man.
