Mary [not Maria] Jane MURRAY b. 10 Jan 1810 at Sunninghill Bective

Estate, near Dublin, Ireland, d. 17 Aug 1898 at "Roodepoort", Philipollis,
Orange Free State Republic, but is buried in Colesberg, m. 4 Dec 1831in
Graaff-Reinet by Ds. Andrew MURRAY [no relative] to John NORVAL Jr., b. 25
May 1795 Glasgow, Scotland and d. 17 Oct 1875 also at "Roodepoort",
Philipollis and also buried in Colesberg. He was the son of John NORVAL and
Charlotte WATSON and went to the Cape as a member of MOODIE's Party in
1817. He first manufactured the broad-rimmed hats worn by farmers and
hunters (in Graaff-Reinet) then moved to Colesberg in 1834 to continue the
hat-making business, but also expanded his interest into auctionery and
other things but he is probably best known for establishing a pontoon ferry
across the Orange River at Dapperfontein - he called it the Glasgow Pont,
but it was not long before it became known as Norval's Pont. They had 13
children.
