About James E. Saunders

From genealogy journal written by Grace Aguilar Veech

The children of James E. Saunders:

  1. Amanda, who married to Baker. This man Baker acted as overseer for a man named Wyckliffe and defrauded his employer of a sum of money, probably considered large at that time. He left his home near Louisville, Ky by stealth leaving his wife to follow with their goods. She did so, carrying pistols for her defense in case any one attempted to stop her. But she was not molested, they stopped in Texas, at that time a harbor for miscreants, and grew to be wealthy. Their sons are still in Texas, except one who recently died very suddenly in San Franciso, and are handsome men with all the appearance of gentlemen. Their mother, Amanda Saunders Baker was the double cousin of Cynthia Ann Saunders Veech, as their fathers were brothers and their mothers were sisters.
  2. Waller was disappointed in love, and embarked with Capt. Walker on a filibustering expedition to Cuba, presumably in the 40's. He returned to Kentucky a good many years after and it is thought he married a Mahaley.
  3. Mary married to Thomson Busey. They early removed to Scotland Co., Mo and became the parents of the following children: Alice, John, James, Watt, Hudson, Harry Elizabeth and Caroline and Hattie.
  4. Irene married to James Moore.
  5. William , no data except that he died in the civil war -- probably never married.
  6. Letetia, married John Willis.
  7. Shelby never married. Losses in the Civil War reduced him to a physical and mental wreck.
