About James Stewart, Sr

James Stewart (Alexander) was born probably in Scotland about 1715. He married Keziah, daughter of Benjamin Scoville of East Haddam. She had brothers Lemuel and Nathan. James was granted a cattle-mark in Voluntown December 5, 1739, “a crop of ye left ear and a halfpenny on under side of ye same ear.” He deeded his land in Voluntown to his father Sept. 25, 1740 and settled in East Haddam, where most of his children were born.

“One of the daughters married a Harvey and another Nathaniel Stillson, a Baptist preacher, and lived in Harpersfield, Delaware County, N. Y.; one of the daughters who married a Harvey afterwards married a Draper: one of the sons named Samuel was a presiding elder in Vermont; Gideon, another son was a presiding elder in Lima, Livingston Col, NY, born about 1782. I met him about 1835 ( at a protracted meeting at Covington, Wyoming County NY; he was a man of wealth.) Another of my aunts married a Cone: one of her sons, a farmer visited me in Vermont in about 1805.”(wrote Elliott Stewart)
