James Stout settled in Monmouth Co., NJ with holdings of 142 acres. "1690 received a lot on Hop River and a farm of 5 acres at Conesconk, NJ from his father."

I shall now introduce James, the fifth son of Richard the first. I know not into what family he married, but he had three sons and four daughters, viz:

  • 1. Benjamin,
  • 2. James,
  • 3. Joseph ,
  • 4. Penelope,
  • 5. Elizabeth,
  • 6. Mercy and
  • 7. Anne.

(Eldest son) Benjamin married Ruth Bogart, by whom he had two sons and six daughters, viz:

  • 1. Joseph,
  • 2. Benjamin,
  • 3. Elizabeth,
  • 4. Sarah,
  • 5. Mary,
  • 6. Rachel,
  • 7. Ruth and
  • 8. Anne.

(Grandchildren by eldest son):

1. Joseph married a daughter of Gabriel Huff, by whom he had two children, viz:

  • 1. John and
  • 2. Mary.

2. Benjamin married a daughter of William Anderson, named Elizabeth, by whom he had a great number of children.

3. Elizabeth, who was the eldest sister to the last mentioned Joseph and Benjamin , was married to John Quick, son of Francis, by whom she had three sons and four daughters, viz:

  • 1. Joseph,
  • 2. Moses,
  • 3. Benjamin,
  • 4. Sarah
  • 5. Ruth,
  • 6. Elizabeth and
  • 7. Mary.

(Eldest son) Joseph married Roxana Quick, the daughter of Jacob Quick, and had no children. (Second son) Moses married Sarah Saxton, the daughter of Jared Saxton, by whom he has a family of children. (Third son) Benjamin married, but I know not into what family nor the number of his children. (Eldest daughter) Sarah, sister to the three last mentioned brothers, was married to John Taylor, by whom she had a son Peter, which is all the description I can give of her family. (Second daughter) Ruth was married to an Englishman of the name of William Abbott -- can give no description of her family. (Third daughter) Elizabeth is not married. (Fourth daughter) Mary was married to George Agee -- can give no description o f her family.

4. Sarah was married to Zebulon Stout, the son of Zebulon, and died without issue. 5. Mary married a Hunt. 6. Rachel married Stephen Hewell. 7. Ruth also married. 8. Anne married Abraham Stout, by whom she had a daughter and named her Sarah.

GEDCOM Note

Category: Gravesend, New Netherland

James's father Richard Stout was an early English settlerunder Dutch rule at a Gravesend, Brooklyn, Kings, western Long Island, circa 1644 to 1657. Gravesend is now a neighborhood in south-central Brooklyn, along the shore of Gravesend Bay and Coney Island. In 1609 Henry Hudson landed his ship the Half Moon there at the island known by the natives as Narrioch (Coney Island). In 1643 Gravesend then became one of the original towns founded in the Dutch colony of New Netherland when Governor Willem Kieft granted a land patent to the Anabaptist Lady Deborah Moody, as a site where that English sect could settle free from religious persecution. Clashes with the natives delayed the town for two more years, until December 19, 1645.
