John Stout, son of Richard I and Penelope Kent Van Princin Stout, was born 1643 or 1644 [1] and married Elizabeth Crawford January 12 1671 by John Bowne, Justice of the Peace.[2] He remained in Middleton, New Jersey and died before February 11 1724/5 date his will was proved [3]and as indicated by the fact that his cattle-mark was assumed by his grandson, John Stout the new Town Clerk. [4]

John and his wife drew Lot 19 and Lot 5 which totaled 240 acres in Middletown, December 30 1667 as one of its first settlers recorded 30 December, 1667. [5][6] This is an overview of John Stout who bought and sold land, was a farmer, built a home on the main street town lot, recorded his cattle-mark September 4 1672, was active in civic affairs, held several city offices and appointed an ensign under Captain John Bowne and Lieutenant James Grover July 4 1681. The details of his life can be found here. [7] [8]

The children of John Sr and Elizabeth Crawford Stout were:

  1. Richard m (1) Esther Tilton, daughter of Peter and Rebecca Brazier Tilton, (2) Mary Tilton, Esther's sister.
  2. John Jr m Unknown, had son Richard.
  3. Hope Still
  4. Deliverance
  5. Frances?
  6. Penelope

John Stout, Jr, son of John Sr and Elizabeth Crawford Stout, based on the passing of his cattle-mark to his son Richard, died before May 12 1753. It continued to be passed from Richard to George Taylor, Jr. in 1761 to John Stout, the carpenter, to Richard Stout, son of John Stout, the carpenter. [9]

Hope Still and Deliverance were twins and born in the block house during an Indian attack which Samuel Smith dates as AD 1669 on p. 67. Deliverance's name was originally Faith and changed after the block house attack ended. Their story may be found here [10][11] [12]

notes

John Stout, the eldest son of Richard the First, named his eldest son Richard, who when married settled at a place called Squan, and was generally after called "Squan Dick," and raised a large family, some of whom settled about Barnegat and along the shore - a great number of whose descendants are there to this day.

The said John named his second son John, who, in consequence of his following the seas, was called "Sailor John," of whose family I am able to give but little account, although it was numerous. One daughter, whose name was Penelope, married John Sutphen, who afterward moved near Neshanie, and had four children, viz: three sons and one daughter, whose names were Derrick, John, Stout and Sarah.

=== Conflicts === ::In the book Space:The_History_of_the_Stout_Family|History of the Stout Family, By Nathan Stout, 1823, the author acknowledges his lackof information on Sailor John's family, and incorrectly reports that the subject of this profile is Sailor John. However, based on what wedo know of this John, he does not follow the description of a man 'following the seas'. As pointed out by John E Stillwell in "Historical and genealogical miscellany" page 322 <ref>John E. Stillwell, 1916, page 322 http://archive.org/stream/historicalgeneal04stil#page/322/mode/1up</ref>, this John, based on occupation and residence could not be he, and Sailor John, is instead, Stout-1165|John Stout.

::Crannell-6|Linda Crannell proposes that another child might be named Penelope. Penelope is possibly a repetition of the conflict notedabove, which also cited that Sailor John had a daughter that was named Penelope. For this reason, and since no sources support it, Penelope is not added as a child here. Of note, however, is that Stillwell does concede that there are likely other children to this marriage.
