About Jan Huijke Huyck

Jan was cheiftan of the grootstraat in Nymegen Holland. he was also a deacon or elder in the church. He took passage with his wife aboard the "Sea Gull" in the company of his brother in law Peter Minuit who was the 1st director in the New world of the dutch west India Co. jan was the "koopman"(storekeeper) for the company. They landed after a voyage of 4 months on the Island of manhatten. A small colony was built which composed of 30 houses and a fort. Jan was appointed a "Zercken Trooster" or comforter of the sick and also read the scripture, the creed and a sermon on the sabbath until a minister arrived the following year.

Castello Plan notes in the Iconography

Land afterwards covered by the present Nos. 17-19 Broadway. The original grant for this plot, to one Jan Huygen, dated June 6, 1649, is in the library of J. Pierpont Morgan, Esq. Huygen was dead before July, 1657, when his widow, Lysbeth Pieters, married Dirck Wiggerts, "late in the Company's service," as he deposed when he took the burgher oath.-Marriages in Ref. Dutch Ch., 21; Rec. N. Am., VII: 200. "Uncle Dirck," as he was commonly known, was a waterside character. He was a ship carpenter, and also owned and operated small boats. He was in New York as late as 1674.-Ibid., IV: 209; VI: 98,99,110; VII: 129. https://nc-chap.org/castello/castello_key_notes4.pdf

"Crol and Jan Huych, comforters of the sick (...) 2 (...) The comforters or visitors of the sick were recognized officers of the Reformed Church in Holland. Huych is probably to be identified with Jan Huygen, Minuit's brother-in-law, mentioned by Michaëlius." Source: John Jameson, "Narratives of New Netherland: 1609-1664" (Applewood Books, 2009), 83.

Notes:

  • Jan Huych, comforter of the sick, is also mentioned in: Royden Woodward, Vosburgh, "The Settlement Of New Netherland, 1624-1626," New York Genealogical and Biographical Record 55 (Jan. 1924): 12. ($)
  • If the primary source (in Dutch) really identifies Jan Huygen as Minuit's brother-in-law, not his son-in-law, then Jan's wife, Lysbeth Pieters, may not be a Minuit at all since the father of Pieter Minuit doesn't have Pieter as a first name. Lysbeth Pieters could be a second wife who just happens to have "Pieters" as a patronymic. According to the following article, the relationship is brother-in-law, and not son-in-law:

L. Hasbrouck Von Sahler, "The Early Generations Of The Van Deusen Family In America," New York Genealogical and Biographical Record 30 (Oct. 1899): 206. (Click on the volume number to consult the file in the public domain.)

That theory seems likely based on the following source.

"I agree with the corrections that Warren made to the Huyck lineage. As for the relationship to Peter Minuit, it was explained by C.A. Weslager (a distinguised researcher from Delaware) in his book "A Man and His Ship: Peter Minuit and the Kalmar Nyckel", written in 1989. I quote:

"Sybille Raet, Peter Minuit's sister-in-law, married Jan Huygen in 1608, and a son Hendrick Huygen was born to them probably in 1609. The Huygens were also a prominient family in Wesel, and Peter Minuit had a warm and familiar relationship with his brother-in-law by marrieage, and a strong affection for his nephew Hendrick Huygen"

in an earlier paragraph, he says that:

"The register of the Willibrordi Church in Wesel (formerly a Dutch Reformed Church, but now an Evangelischen Kirchengemeinde (Lutheran congregation), indicated that Peter Minuit (spelled Myniewit) was married to Gerduudt (Gertrude) Raet on August 20, 1613. Gertude's father, Arnt Raet, was the burgomaster of Kleve. Her brother Goert was a Kleve businessman who later succeeded his father as burgomaster. Gertrude also had a sister named Sibylle". [this is the sister who married Jan Huygen, I assume]. (...)

None of this clarifies the who/when/wheres of Elizabeth Pieters, who must have been a later wife of Jan Huygen. And there is no clear evidence linking Jan Huyck/Huygens to Andries Hans Huyck, although there is certainly some circumstantial evidence.

The idea that Jan Huygen and Lysbeth Pieters were the parents of Andries Hans Huyck, a resident of Albany, appears to come from this source: Cuyler Reynolds, Hudson-Mohawk Genealogical and Family Memoirs: A Record of Achievements of the People of the Hudson and Mohawk Valleys in New York State, Included within the Present Counties of Albany, Rensselaer, Washington, Saratoga, Montgomery, Fulton, Schenectady, Columbia and Greene, 4 volumes (New York: Lewis Historical Publishing Company, 1911), 1: 397.

Death

1657 05 Jul; Dirck Weyerts, wid Tryn Dircks; Lysbeth Pieters, wid Jan Huygen

Miscellaneous

Some sources apparently give the birth date of April 18, 1617, to Johannes. For instance: https://sites.rootsweb.com/~ohfulton/Huyck/HuyckMyersAndDescBook.pdf

However, the timeline doesn't add up. He was mentioned in a document dated November 1626, along with Pieter Minuit. He was said to be comforter of the sick. He was therefore not 9 years old at the time.
