"The emigrant ancestor of this family was Jan 'Janse' Ver Kerken, who came from Bruennielzen, a town on the River Linde, near Buren, (Gelderland). He embarked on the good ship 'Rostree' with his wife, Mayke, and children, and upon his arrival at New Amsterdam in 1663, with his family, took up his abode at New Utrecht, Long Island, where he settled and became possessed of large tracts of land. His wife, Mayke Gisberts, appears on the assessment rolls of new Utrecht in 1675-76-83-93. Jan Janse

The marriage record lists him as a "young man of Beusichem," which is a small village near Buren. Sometime after the marriage, the couple relocated to Buurmalsen, a small farming community on the river Linge, about 60 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam. Beusichem and Buurmalsen still exist, and the church in Buren, built in 1347 in which they were married still stands. There is a plaque in the floor of the sanctuary with the name Verkerk.

According to Wilson V. Ledley in his 'The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey', article on the Van Kirk Family (May 1966), he says the original name was Verkerk, a contraction of van der Kerk. Ver is the contraction for van der and kerk means church.

Settled in New Utrecht in Kings County,, NY.

Listed in the assessment rolls of New Utrecht in 1675, 1676, 1683 and 1693. Dongan's Patent of 1686; oaths of allegiance, 1687, and the census of 1698.

Served as a magistrate in 1679 and 1684.

Will was dated Nov. 10, 1688 (NYGBR 47:232), signed also by his wife, Mayke Verkerke, who is said to have died in that year; KCo. 370.

Jan, wife, and 5 children came over on the Ship "Rooseboom", "Rosetree" in english, Holland Society, 'Passengers to New Netherland', pg. 23. His name is spelled Verberck.

Born circa 1630 in Buurmelzen, a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of Geldermalsen, and lies about 9 km west of Tiel. Buurmalsen was a separate municipality from 1818 to 1978, when it became a part of Geldermalsen.[1] In 2001, the village of Buurmalsen had 574 inhabitants. The built-up area of the village was 0.15 km², and contained 210 residences.[2] The statistical area "Buurmalsen", which also can include the peripheral parts of the village, as well as the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 960.[3]

Jan Janse Verkerk was born circa 1628 at Bueer Maetsen, Gelderland, Netherlands. He was the son of Jan Verkerk. Jan Janse Verkerk married Mayke Gisberts on 1 April 1651 at Buren, Gelderland, Netherlands. Jan Janse Verkerk emigrated in 1663 from Buurmelzen, Netherlands; aboard the ship De Rooseboom (The Rosetree). He left a will on 10 November 1688 estate to Barent Verkerck and Jan Verkerck, Jr. "his sunns" living by the appearant inn his house.

Genealogies of Long Island, p. 80: p. 154, Mutual Partition made 6th day of May 1689 between Roeloff Verkerck, Aert Verkerck, Barent Verkerck and jan Verkerck, sunns of Jan Verkeck, dec'd, that they are agreed together concerning the estate of their father as follows: Barent Verkerck and Jan Verckerck, being the youngist brother shall have the halve length of two lotts of land lying at new Uytrect the neerist to the hilss at the west side and streching in length about 600 rodd. Northerly and Southerly as above saidt he right halve of the length to with 300 rodd, and they shall have two new lotts lying at New Uytrect by the great pan betwicx the lott of Ruth Joosten and the lott of Gysbert Thyssen, and Jan Vandyck with the privilidge in the common wood for one lott signed in presence of Aucke Janse, Johannes Van Ekelen..
