David Crawford married Jane Crawford (daughter of Patrick Crawford – so yes, she was also a Crawford) in 1654 in James City, Virginia. Jane was born in Virginia in 1633 and died in 1710 in St Peter’s Parish, New Kent, Virginia.

I believe that the "Jane Ann Douglas Crawford" name identification from many sources is totally incorrect. It appears to me that David Crawford's wife's name was Margaret Arris (not Harris) and that she was likely the daughter of John Arris.
It also appears that other information noted is incorrect, such as the December 13th date that was in the year 1689, that was the date of death of David's father John Crawford (or possibly John Arris). (I have not found confirmation of the 1676 date of death for John Crawford that also is widely distributed). David Crawford died in 1710 and Margaret Crawford appears to have died soon thereafter.

Thanks for the information on Jane Douglas, and the specific
date/location of their marriage. I have seen different statements about David's wife, but without any source being given. Starting with genealogical publications, Lampkin's book ("John Crawford, 1648", p.5) does not offer his wife's name but says they were married in James City in 1654. Lucinda Stephens ("Crawford Genealogy") gives neither hhis wife's name nor marriage date/place. WP Anderson ("Anderson Family Records", p.104) says he married an unknown person in James City Co, 1649. The most careful review of historical documents on David Crawford is contained in "Laurus Crafurdiana" (1883), pp.12-16, and it does not offer a suggsted name for his wife nor the date of their marriage, but gives their first born as about 1650/54. David did not leave a will and his death date is known only approximately.

Turning to less reliable sources, the Ancestral File (AFN:2CP2-08) calls her Jane, married 1654, James City Co; ; the IGI gives Jane, 1649 James City Co (3 entries agree), and Jane 1654 (2 say James City Co, 1 says New Kent Co) and Jane 1661, about 1661 James City Co and 1 says Jane about 1665 in Virginia, none giving Jane as Douglas.

Looking on the Internet at RootsWeb WorldConnect, I see that there are 124 listings of our David Crawford being married to a Jane, and in 5 of these her name is given as Jane A. Douglas, b.1633, m.1649, and only one of these provides a reference (which is Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #986). In another 2 of the 124, her name is given Jane A. Davis, b.1633, but with no references. It is always disconcerting when the best researched studies can not find a fact and secondary and tertiary sources appear to have the answer.

James City Co Church records seem not to go back before 1662, and I am not sure how to proceed to try to verify Jane's identity, if that is in fact her name. Perhaps someone out there knows of some surviving primary document?
