About Jane Jane Hamman
"Jane Hammons" appears on the 1850 census as a twenty-seven year old living with her husband Andrew and their children; Perlina (Purlina), Thomas (William Thomas), and Christianna (Artelia Christina). The family's "real-estate owned" was worth $800.
After the death of her husband, Jane was known to keep three breeding cabins. She kept three male Negro slaves who were used like we use bulls for stud. They were said to be large and very black. Other slave owners would pay her to let them bring their Negro women for breeding. They were only permitted to bring large strong black women. Small brown women were not acceptable. The idea was to breed large strong offspring. It may have been done before her husband died, too.
In August 26, 1870, the census records that "Nancy E. Hammonds", aged 17, was living with her mother "Jency" and siblings in Magoffin County, Kentucky. Jency is identifiable with Jane, who was pregnant with Nancy at the time of Andrew's death.
