About Japhet Chapin

Deacon Japhet Chapin, son of Samuel & Cicely, lived for a time in Milford, CT. He fought in the 18 May 1676 Battle of Turner's Falls, where the Indians were defeated folling their burning of Springfield in Oct 1675, King Philip's War See:Winthrop McKins..

"Japhet begat ten children, of whom eight were boys and two girls - and these eight boys begat eighty-seven children" Springfield, MA historian Mason D. Green (NEB genealogy)

Japhet, the fourth son and sixth child, was born in Roxbury, Mass., 15 Oct. 1642, the year in which his parents removed to Springfield, where he spent his boyhood; at the age of 22 we find him located in Milford, Conn., where he was married 22 July 1664 to Abilena Coley, the daughter of Samuel Coley and granddaughter of James Prudon - both of whom were among the original planters of Milford in 1639. Whatever the incentive that took him to Connecticut, he apparently made his home there for some years; for on 16 Nov. 1669 he accepted a deed here from Capt. John Pynchon of Springfield. On Mar. 9, 1666, John Pynchon deeded to Deacon Samuel the greater part of the land adjoining Springfield in the valley between the Chicopee River and Williamsett Brook. This land Deacon Chapin deeded to his son Japhet 16 Apr. 1673, and here he built the home where he spent the remainder of his life - and with him his parents made their home, and here Deacon Chapin died at the beginning of King Phillip's war.

History records that Japhet was engaged in the Great Fight at Turner's Falls in May, 1675, and a Chapin Genealogy published in 1862 contains the following: "On the outside of an old account book belonging to said Japhet and supposed to be his handwriting we find: 'I went out volunteare against the ingens the 17th of

May 1676, and we engaged batel the 19th of May in the morning before sunrise, and made great Spoil upon the enemy with the Los of 37 men and the Captain Turner, and came home the 20th of May'." (Incidentally, we might add that History reports that "in the conflict the Indians lost in killed and drowned 300 warriors".)

Because of Japhet's service in the war, his son Thomas was granted a large portion of the land given the soldiers and their descendants, by the General Court of Massachusetts.

Like his father, Japhet is said to have been a man of great piety, a bulwark in the Puritan faith.

His wife Abilena, died at Chicopee 17 Nov. 1710, and the following spring 31 May 1711 he married Dorothy Root of Enfield, Conn., and died 20 Feb. 1712, and she remarried.

Of the ten children of Japhet, three were daughters, Sarah and two Hannahs - the second Hannah born 1689, the next year after the death of the first. Of her it is recorded that she was "taken captive by the Indians and kept in captivity for two years". One wonders when and how she was returned to her home. (NEB Genealogy)

Baptism: 15 OCT 1642 Roxbury, Suffolk, MA

Burial: Springfield Cemetery, Springfield, Hampden, MA 2

Note:

According to the book "First Congregational Church" of Chicopee, MA (printed in 1976), the sons of Deacon Samuel Chapin, Japhet and Henry, were living in homes of their own in the "Old Parish of Springfield", as Chicopee was then known in 1675. For years they, their children, their children's children and neighbors attended First Church, now at Court Square in Springfield. The traveling was very difficult, so forty-nine men, twenty-four of them Chapin's, petitioned First Church to be set off as a Fifth Parish of Springfield and they planned to build a church of their own. When their petition was denied, they took their case to the Massachusetts General Court which granted them the right to build. On January 3, 1751 Edward Chapin, one of the grandchildren of Japhet writes that they began cutting timber for a Meeting House. The next day forty men advanced into the woods to cut the timber. All volunteers built the Meeting House by June 5, 1751.

Japhet was prominent in town affairs of Springfield, MA and was chosen Selectman 8 times. Japhet was engaged in King Phillip's War and battled with the Indians at Turners Falls in 1676. A deacon in a Church in Springfield MA. John Pynchon deeded land in Springfield to him 11/16/1669. Japhet built a house at the upper end of Chicopee Street.

Daughter Hannah was married 12/03/1703 to John Sheldon of Deerfield, MA. The town of Deerfield was attacked by the Indians about three months after her marriage, and she was taken captive with many others, and marched to Canada. After about two years, many of the captives were redeemed and returned home. It is thought that Hannah's husband went to Canada and obtained her release before the release of the other prisoners.

The early Chapin's were laid to rest not far from their church in the parish "Old Burying Ground" on Chicopee Street , Chicopee which was opened in 1741, where more than 700 friends, relatives and ancestors rest in peace as cars speed by on Chicopee Street. The "Old Burying Ground" is graced today by the Tiffany-built Chapin Mausoleum.

Biography

Massachusetts state seal
Japhet Chapin was an early settler in Massachusetts.
Japhet (also spelled Japhat), the son of Samuel, was christened on 15 Oct 1642 at Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts.[1]

His father, Samuel, came from England to reside in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1642. "Japhett Chapin Joined in marriage with Abelenah Coley the two and twentieth day of July [1664)."[2][3] Japhet married Abilena Coley on 22 July 1662 at Milford, Connecticut, or Springfield, Massachusetts.[4] She died on 17 Nov 1711.[5] They had at least the following children:

"Samuell, s. Japhett and Abilene Chapin, July 4, 1665." [6][7]
"Sarah, d. Japhet and Abilene, at Milford, Mar. 15, 1668."[8][9]
"Thomas, s. Japhet and Abilene, May 20, 1671 at Milford.HR"[10][11]
"John, s. Japhet and Abilene, May 14, 1674."[12][13]
"Ebenezer, s. Japhet and Abilene, June 26, 1677."[14][15]
"Hannah, d. Japhet and Abilena, June 21, 1679.[16][17]d.y. [18]
Hannah, d. Japhet and Abilene, July 18, 1680."[19][20]
"David, s. Japhet and Abilene, Nov. 16, 1682."[21][22]
"Jonathan, s. Japhet and Abilene, Feb. 20, 1685."[23][24]d.y.[25]
Jonathan, s. Japhet and Abilene, Sept. 23, 1688."[26][27]
On May 19, 1676 Japhet Chapin was in the "Great Falls Fight" at Turner's Falls, Massachusetts.[28] It is claimed that because the English attack was a surprise, only one English soldier was killed while 300 Indian warriors were killed and drowned.[28]

"Japhet and Dorithy Root of Enfeild, [married] May 31, 1711." citing Book 1, page 112[29]

"Japhet Chapin the husband of Dority Chapen was sick and died on feb 20, 1712."[30] and is buried at the Springfield Cemetery, Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, USA. Plot: Willow Avenue 1-10.[31] His gravestone shows that he was 70 years old. You can see a picture of his gravestone at Find A Grave: Memorial #36605785.

He passed away in 1712.

An excerpt from the Chapin Geneaology:

Japhet Chapin, of Chicopee, son of Dea. Samuel Chapin, b. 1642; m. (1) July 22, 1664, Abileuah Cooley. Mrs. Abilenah Chapin d. Nov. 17, 1710. And a small stone in the old burying ground in Springfield marks the spot where she was buried, m. (2) May 31, 1711, Dorothy Root of Eifield, Ct. He d. Feb. 20, 1712, and was buried by the side of his first wife Abilenah. Their remains and the stones which mark their resting places have (probably) been removed to the new cemetery in Springfield.
Japhet probably resided for a time in Milford, Connecticut- As the Worshipful Capt. John Pyncheon of Springfield conveyed to Japhet Chapin of Milford, in Connecticut Colony, a small strip of land near Connecticut River in Springfield, Bounds east on Deacon Chapin's land. Deed dated 16th of November, 1669. By Deed bearing date March 9th, 1666, John Pyncheon conveyed to Samuel Chapin the greater part of the land lying in the Valley between Chicopee River and Willimansett Brook. And by Deed bearing date April 16th, 1673, Samuel conveyed the same premises to his son Japhet Chapin. The said Japhet built him a house at the upper end of Chicopee street, north-westerly of where the dwelling house of Henry Sherman now (1862) stands.
Japhet was at the great fight at Turner's fulls, May iSth, 1676, and on the outside leaf of an old account book belonging to said Japhet, I find the following, supposed to be in his hand-writing.
" I went out Volenteare against ingens the 17th of May, 1676 and we ingaged batel the 19th of May in the moaning before sunrise and made great Spoil upon the enemy and came off the same day with the, Los of 37 men and the Captin Turner, and came home the 20th of May."
Thomas Chapin, son of Japhet, was one of the original grantees of the large tract of land which was granted to the officers and soldiers and their descendants in the Falls fight. And on another leaf of the same book, I find the following,
"my father was taken out of this troubelsom world the 11 day of November about eleven of the clock in the eve, 1675."
After the death of Japhet Cbapin, the Rev. Mr. Williams of Deerfield wrote a lengthy letter to his children, instructing them concerning the improvement which they should make of his death, and speaking of him as having been a man of great piety. This letter is now (1859) probably in the care of Mr. Dormer Chapin.[32]
