Jared Baldwin, son of Caleb Baldwin and Ann Tibbals was born in Milford, possibly on January 30, 1731. He was raised in Newtown where he met and married Damaras Booth on September 18, 1753. The couple had twelve children between 1754 and 1777.
In 1762, he served in Connecticut's Second Regiment under Captain Nathan Whiting during the French and Indian War. Listed under the Connecticut Militia for 1777, he served in Captain Richard Smith's Company alongside his eldest son, Jared, who was 22 years of age at the time. Records indicate that while Jared Sr. began his enlistment in Danbury and proceeded on to Compo Beach, his son actually marched on to Ridgefield. They were certainly responding to the burning of Danbury that April 26th and the Battle of Ridgefield the very next day. While both father and son survived, only Jared Sr. continued in service. Two years later he was part of an expedition to Norwalk in July 1779, likely in response to Tryon's invasion of that city on July 11th.
After the war Jared Sr. moved to Luzerne County in Pennsylvania and settled a large tract of land under title from the State of Connecticut. After his wife died in 1816, he returned to live with his son, Dr. Gabriel Baldwin in Easton.
