Bogus Genealogy
It has been claimed that Jonet Hamilton, here treated, is the daughter of James Hamilton of Evandale and Libbertoun and his wife Christian Boyd. It is also claimed that she was born in about 1577 and that she died in about 1616, although evidence in support of these claims is not cited and the dates given are not suseptible to proof. WikiTree. She is also said to have married William "Ninian" Reid, but no mention is made of this marriage in Stirnet's summary of the published accounts of the family of Hamilton of Evandale, Libberton and Crawfordjohn. Stirnet: Hamilton 18
Jonet Hamilton, here treated, did in fact marry Ninian Reid, who resided as Eastpans in the East Lothian parish of Prestonpans. The only justification for changing her husband's name from Ninian to William "Ninian" Reid seems to be Stevenson Browne's determination to identify Ninian Reid in Eastpans as William Reid, that son of Henry Reid and Margaret Tod in Dunfermline whose baptism was registered there on 23 September 1576. Register of Dunfermline This is not genealogy. This is complete nonsense. WikiTree
James Hamilton of Evandale and Libbertoun did have a daughter named Jean, or Jonet Hamilton, but she was contracted to marry Sir William Cockburn of Skirling on 3 February 1604, Stirnet: Hamilton 18 and appears still to have been alive in 1621. NRS: GD89/1/51 On the other hand, Jonet Hamilton, here treated, married Ninian Reid at Prestonpans in 1597 and had six children who were born there during the period 1598-1613. It follows, therefore, that Janet Hamilton, here treated, is not the same person as Jonet or Jean Hamilton, Lady Skirling
The Question of Identity
Jonat Hamilton, here treated, is first noticed on 25 August 1597, the date upon which she and her future husband were booked for proclamation of marriage at Prestonpans in East Lothian, in the pre-union Kingdom of Scotland. Because she is not said to be a parishioner elswhere, it might reasonably be concluded that she probably belonged to Prestonpans. Her father and mother are not mentioned in this record, and, since the earliest baptismal records at Prestonpans belong to the year 1596 it is not possible to identify their names from this source.
Unfortunately, the father and mother of Jonet Hamilton, here treated, are not mentioned in the baptismal records of her six children, although they do contain the names of Hamiltons who may have been relatives. For example, David Hamilton, elder, and James Hamilton, witnessed the baptism of her eldest son James on 4 February 1598. On 18 December 1600 the baptism of her son Alexander was witnessed by Mr. Alexander Hamilton. The baptism of her son John, which was registered at Prestonpans on 5 January 1609, was witnessed by Alexander Hamilton and Robert Hamilton. Master Alexander Hamilton witnessed the baptism of her daughter Jean on 20 April 1611, and the baptism of her son Thomas was witnessed by William Hamilton, skipper, on 23 December 1613.
Marriage
Jonet Hamilton, here treated, married Ninian Reid. They were booked for proclamation on 25 August 1597, at Prestonpans in East Lothian, Scotland, and they were married there on 27 August 1597. The Marriage record reads as follows: "Mariage 27 Augustj 1597. Niniane reid and Jonet hamiltoun under promeis of mariage and to be proclaimed on Sonday nixt to cum 25 of this instant pro primo and to compleit the bands wt possibill diligence". Response to charges of bogus biography
Jonat Hamilton was daughter of James Hamilton and Christian Boyd. She married William Reid on 27 Aug 1597 in Prestonpans, Haddingtonshire, Scotland. She was mother of Alexander Reid, who died in the Battle of Aberdeen. Her Wifitree profile is https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hamilton-23964
Her parents, James Hamilton and Christian Boyd, were contracted to marry on 9 January 1571 per her Wikitree profile at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Boyd-2091.
James Hamilton is referred to in the Wikitree article as Sir James Hamilton of Evandale and Libbertoun, son and heir of James Hamilton of Orawfurdjohn. Crawfurdjohn is actually Crawfordjohn. James Hamilton’s father, James Hamilton of Crawfordjohn, gained one share of Crawfordjohn from James Hamilton of Arran, who kept the other share for himself after King James V died. There is a nice history at this site. http://www.baronage.co.uk/2003c/crawford.html
Jonat’s father, James Hamilton, is summarized on this Wikitree profile. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hamilton-4332
Jonat Hamilton’s husband, William Reid, has a Wikitree profile here. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Reid-11378
Jonat Hamilton’s brother, James Hamilton of Evandale, had a daughter named Jean Hamilton. Wikitree makes no reference to who this Jean Hamilton married. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hamilton-23968
The writer of the charge of bogus biography also took the liberty to delete the tree based on his own research, which was not accurate. The tree was correct per the history of that family and Scotland in those years.
CRITICAL COMMENT BY NEIL REID FORD
THE PEDIGREE PUBLISHED BY WIKITREE IDENTIFIES JONAT HAMILTON'S HUSBAND AS WILLIAM "NINIAN" REID, WHEN HE WAS IN FACT CALLED NINIAN REID. THE ONLY JUSTIFICATION FOR THIS MISIDENTIFICATION APPEARS TO BE THE AUTHOR'S DETERMINATION TO IDENTIFY JONAT HAMILTON'S HUSBAND AS THAT SON OF HENRY REID AND MARGARET TOD IN DUNFERMLINE, WHOSE BAPTISM WAS REGISTERED THERE ON 23 SEPTEMBER 1576. Register of Dunfermline THIS IS NOT GENEALOGY. IT IS COMPLETE NONSENSE.
