Jermaine La Juane Jackson (born December 11, 1954) is an American singer, songwriter, bass guitarist, and member of the Jackson family. He was a member of The Jackson Five, a singing group composed of four of his brothers and him, from 1962 to 1975, where he was the second lead vocalist (after his brother Michael) and played bass guitar.
Jermaine Lajuane Jackson is an African American singer, bass guitarist, formerly of The Jackson 5 and brother of American pop stars Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. Born to parents Joseph and Katherine Jackson, Jermaine became the original lead singer of an earlier incarnation of The Jackson 5 until 1967 when younger brother Michael was assisted lead vocals but Jermaine would co-lead with Michael for many years. Jackson and his brothers signed with Motown Records in 1969.
Jermaine was the co-lead singer of The Jackson 5, after his brother Michael, and sings notable parts of ?I Want You Back?, ?I'll Be There?, and "I Am Love". Like Michael, Jermaine also began a solo career concurrent to his tenure in The Jackson 5, and had a hit with the 1972 Shep and the Limelites cover "Daddy's Home".
When The Jackson 5 left Motown, Jermaine left the group and stayed at Motown, as he was married to Hazel Gordy, the daughter of Motown owner Berry Gordy). Jackson was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for his 1979 album Let's Get Serious. He had several Hot 100 Top 20 hits throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including "Daddy's Home" (#9), "Let's Get Serious" (written and produced by Stevie Wonder) (#9), "Let Me Tickle Your Fancy" (featuring Devo on backing vocals) (#18), "Dynamite" (#15) "Do What You Do" (#13) and "I Think It's Love" (#16). A duet with his brother Michael, "Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin'", hit #1 on the dance chart in 1984. In 1985, his duet with Pia Zadora, "When The Rain Begins To Fall", topped several singles charts in Europe. His final chart success, 1989's "Don't Take It Personal", hit #1 on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart.
Jermaine was married three times, first to Hazel Gordy (mother of Jermaine, Jr., Autumn and Jeremy), then to Margaret Maldonado (mother of Jaimy and Jourdyn; common-law marriage), then to Alejandra Genevieve Oiaza (ex-wife of brother Randy Jackson and mother of Jaffar and Jermajesty). All three marriages ended in divorce. Since 2004, he has been married to Haleema Rasheed.
He also has a daughter named Dawn; her mother's identity is unknown.
Jermaine converted to Islam after a visit in Bahrain in the 1980s. In 1992, he, Margaret, and Suzanne de Passe produced ', an award-winning and highly-rated miniseries about the history of The Jackson 5. Jermaine, Jr. portrayed his father as a young teenager in the miniseries.
In 2005, during his brother Michael's child-abuse trial, Jermaine spoke out in favor of his brother. He publicly defended Michael on news shows such as Larry King Live, and appeared with him in court. On June 25th, 2009, Jermaine was the brother to announce that Michael had died. Speaking later to media outlets, he said he wished his life had been taken instead. He also said he was Michael's "...backbone. Someone to be there for him. I was there and he was sort of like Moses, things he couldn't say I would say them." During Michael's funeral service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Jermaine served as a pall bearer along with his brothers. He also performed an emotional rendition of the song "Smile," by Charlie Chaplin—Michael's favorite song—before breaking down in tears.
