About John Woodruff Smith

According to a post on Ancestry.com in the Berrett-Freeman Family Tree, John Woodruff Smith, son of Jesse Nathaniel Smith, Jr., and his wife, Nancy Ann Freeman, was shot and killed by an unknown assailant while he was walking down the street in El Paso, Texas. At the time of his death, he was engaged to be married. I assume he was engaged to be married to Eunice Electa Harris, 1890-1960, since she was attached to his tree on Ancestry.com. His death certificate indicates that he was single at the time of his death, was 26 years, 10 months and 8 days old, had been working as a laborer, and the informant on the death certificate was his mother, Nancy Ann Freeman Smith who lived at 1304 E. Overland Street.

The above photo was found on Ancestry.com and entitled Jesse Nathaniel Smith, Jr., and sons, but I'm not sure if one of the sons pictured was John Woodruff, since he died at the age of 26 in 1914, and Jesse himself died in 1912. Jesse Nathaniel Smith, Jr., is obviously the one on the left, and I thought that the two sons pictured in the back might have been Francis and Henry. If John is the one seated on the right, then he would have been about 25 years old in 1912 when his father passed away, and the man on the right pictured here looks a lot older than 25 years of age based on his receding hairline.

If the man in the back on the left is Francis, he would have been 22 years old in 1912, and if the man on the right in back is Henry, he would have been about 20 years old in 1912, and they both look about those ages in thephoto. Of course, any of the men pictured could have been Jesse's son by his other wife, Jesse Nathaniel Smith III, Elias, William or Moroni. Wish someone would have labeled the photo!
