About Joan Clopton

Additional Curator's Notes:

Sources for Joan Morrow Clopton disagree on every date of her life. The two most reliable sources are her father's will and The Visitations of Suffolk. From her father's will we know that she was alive, unmarried and a minor in 1464. From The Visitations, we know that she married Sir William Clopton and had at least six children. Three sons are named. Three daughters are identified by their husbands' names.

Joan Morrow was the daughter of Sir William Morrow (or Marrow or Marowe), Lord Mayor of London, and wife Katherine Ryche. She was born in Stepney, London, Middlesex, England, no later than 1464, but probably earlier. She married Sir Wiliam Clopton of Kentwell Hall, Suffolk, England, son of Sir John Clopton, Sherrif of Suffolk and Norfolk, and wife Alice Darcy. He became Lord of Castlyne.

Joan's date of death is not clear. In addition to the six children named below, many researchers include Katherine Clopton, born about 1497. In this case, Joan's death would be in or after 1497. After Joan's death, William married again and had at least two more sons. Some sources say there were three marriages, but the Visitations says two marriages. Finding the dates of the later marriages would help to pinpoint the date of Joan's death.

Joan is buried with her husband in Holy Trinity Churchyard, Long Melford, Suffolk, England.

According to The Visitations of Suffolk, Joan and William had the following children:

  • John Clopton, eldest son and heir,
  • William Clopton
  • Robert Clopton, who became a priest
  • a daughter who married Sir Geffery Gates of High Ester, Essex
  • a daughter who married Richard Pooley, Esq1., of Boxted, Suffolk
  • a daughter who married a Mr. Austin
