MILITARY: "Joel Bauman, served in Company G 54th Pennsylvania Voluteers, during the Civil War. He was 27 years old when he enrolled into the regiment. He was a Carpenter from the town of Berlin, Brothers Valley Township, Somerset County. He left behind his wife Catharine, to enlist for the war. She bore him a daughter, and a son, both would unfortunately die in January 1863. This is about the same time of his enlistment. Joel Bauman, was not on the muster-out roll at the end of the war. He returned home to his wife, and by 1880, they would have five children. Bates, Samuel P. - History of the Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865 - Harrisburg: R. Singerly, State Printer. 1868 Vol. II p.165 Listed as Joel Bowman."
