Joel Potts was a Predestinarian (Hardshell) Baptist, and later was a founding member of the Walnut Hill Universalist Church near Sharpsburg.
His muzzle-loading rifle is now in possession of the New Salem State Park Museum, near the place where he first settled in Illinois. His last days were spent with his son, George Dallas Potts, a fourth-mile north of the log cabin family home. He died there on July 19, 1898 at the age of 87 years. He was buried in the Old Walnut hill Cemetery beside his last two wives.
