Johan Nortjé (1957 - 2023)
Brief overview:
Johan (66), was murdered and his wife Susan (56), assaulted during a farm attack. Nortjé was killed at about 06:30 on Sunday January 15th on his farm, Wilgekraal, in the Badfontein Valley.
Nortjé went outside on Sunday morning to move his Toyota Hilux when he was approached by two suspects. According to an eyewitness, Nortjé was shot at point-blank range while his hands were in the air. The suspects tried to hide his body under large gingham bags in one of the outbuildings.
The attackers then entered his home through the kitchen, assaulted and tied up Susan, with wire.
Farmworkers, already working in the fields, realised that something was amiss when they saw the Toyota Hilux driving at breakneck speed on the farm road toward the R36. One of the workers rushed to a neighbour with a tractor and the other workers rushed to the house. The neighbour untied Susan.

- Numerous farm attacks occurred during January 2023, in four different provinces.
- On Friday 13th January at around 06h00 Russel Revers (72) was attacked and shot in the right leg at his farm near Kleinmond, in the Western Cape. During the incident a 42-year-old man was shot dead and a 41-year-old man was arrested. Russel had apparently caught the men stealing panels. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was admitted into the intensive care unit. The Caledon police are investigating cases of attempted murder and trespassing. Russell was taken to a nearby hospital where he was admitted into the intensive care unit.
- On 19th January, farm foreman, Obie Oberholzer, from Limpopo, was overpowered by five men. It was between 02h00 and 03h00, and he was asleep at the time. The perpetrators cut the electric fence and forced open the front door. Obie was stabbed multiple times and assaulted over the head with a pick-axe handle. The attackers also beat his dog. They demanded the safe keys, his wallet, firearm and ammunition. Obie was taken to hospital by ambulance. No-one has been arrested. Five months earlier, Obie lost his wife, Lindie Oberholzer Lindie Oberholzer (52). Lindie was murdered in the family home at Windemere Way, Bendor, Polokwane, on 17th August 2022.
- On 26th January, A 65-year-old farmer, from farm Vaalheuwel, was assaulted with an ashtray and biltong cutter during a farm attack in the Steytlerville district in the Eastern Cape. A 50-year-old man entered his house through the back door. He asked the farmer for diesel, yet there was no vehicle, then he demanded the farmers gun, which he refused to handover. After being assaulted the farmer relented and handed over his 9mm pistol and cash to the man, who fled in the farmers vehicle. The attacker was found and arrested the next day.
- On 29th January, Anet Coetzee was shot in the face during an attack, in the bathroom of her home, at her rented farm near Brits, North West Province, where she and her ten-year-old son live. She was in critical condition, and rushed to hospital, then transferred to a different hospital.

- One suspect (36), was arrested at Spring Valley in eMalahleni on Monday January 16th at around 18:00 in connection with the murder.
- Members of the SAPD K9 Unit took part of the operation.The suspect was shot and wounded, and then arrested by the SAPS members. The suspect is currently in a critical condition at Witbank Hospital.
