Note: This John Landes is called "Ephrata" John to distinguish him from all the other Landes/Landis men named John.

Emmert Bittinger has written a two part article titled "Ephrata John 'Hannes' Landes of Lancaster County, PA" published in Mennonite Family History, January and April 1994.

Immigration is another iffy question. I have seen a record that says he came in 1717 and settled in Ephrata. This was in York Co. Historical Society Journal, Vol. 30, page 76.

His first child was born in 1722, and wife Margaretha Nass's birthdate is 1707, and because there is a gap of 8 years between second and third recorded children, we feel there must have been a first wife, who possibly died in childbirth between 1724 and 1729.

The cemetery where they reportedly are buried is the Landis-Kemper Cemetery in Akron. There are no stones standing, all are flat and only a few square inches of a few stones are visible. Friends and I visited the site about 1995 and were attempting to carefully pull back the grass to look at the stones. We were chased off by a man who said it was private property, his property, and he did not want anyone disturbing the grass.

Looking at the warrant map, and superimposing it on current day maps, using the creeks as references, it appears that the cemetery is on the highest point of Ephrata John's warranted land. He warranted the land from the Penns on 27 Feb 1734, surveyed on 19 Oct 1736 and patented on 28 Feb 1738, filed in Philadelphia as A-1-189, 135 acres. It is surrounded partly by Hammer, Middle and Cocalico Creeks.

The best list of his children comes from the deeds transferring part of his estate to son David. Ten years after his death, 23 Aug 1766, [date may be wrong, see next paragraph] Lancaster Co. deed BB-530, is the transfer of a 66 acre tract of that land from the estate to son David. Most of David's siblings sign off on that deed, namely, John Landes, Henry Landes, Jacob Sunday and wife Mary, Jacob Hernley & wife Ann, Henry Moller and wife Elizabeth, Christian Hase and wife Margaret, Jacob Keller and wife Barbara, Daniel Bowman and wife Susanna, Michael Bear and wife Magdalene. Catharine and husband Samuel Bowman, then living in Cumberland Co., PA signed off in deed BB-533, dated 20 March 1770. The other children: Jacob Landes, Benjamin Landes, Abraham Landes and Salome Landes, spinster, all signed off in deed BB-534, dated 27 June 1774.

In 1802, David Landis, Sr. deeds 42 acres of the above 66 acres to son David, Jr. In that deed, [original found in the Historical Society of Cocalico Valley], the date of the previous transfer was written as 23 Aug 1756. It also mentions that some of the 66 acres was set aside as family burial grounds.

This is a copy of the will of John Landis, known as "Ephrata John" Landis. This was retyped from the 1933 Landis Family Reunion Booklet, p17. It stated that the will was recorded in the Lancaster Court House.

In the name of God, Amen. I, John Landis, of Cocalico Township, in the County of Lancaster, in the Province of Pennsylvania, Yeoman, being of good mind and memory and understanding to make this my last will and testament as following, viz.: First I will that all my just debts and funeral charges shall be paid and satisfied. Furthermore, it is my will that my beloved wife Margaret shall have the third of my land and moveables if she remain a widow, and I will that she shall have this, my place in her life, till my youngest children being raised up. But if she could not well keep the place so long, so shall she give it to one child and from her third, or how she sees best to do with the children, but the third shall be hers that she can do with what she pleases and also this my place, as above mentioned, to be in her hand till the children all raised up. And it is my will that which child that takes the place, that the other children not being to sharp upon him with that he must pay out, but yearly as much as he can well make up, and give and bequeath unto my eldest son John one Bible in fore hand, and further, it is my will that all my children shall have equal shares. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this first day of May in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and fifty-six, 1756. JANNAS LANDIS Witnesses: Jeremias Wolfe Bartholome Sigrist Jacob Sunday.

Lancaster Court House Will book B-132, said the will was in German and therefore was not recorded. It was proved on 30 July 1756. Since there was no executor named, widow Margaret was named as Administrator. Will book Y-2-395 has the translated will.

Birth: Mar. 6, 1696, Germany Death: May 14, 1756 Cocalico Lancaster County Pennsylvania, USA

John Landes was born 6 March 1696, and married Margaretha Naas who was born 19 April 1707. He is called "Ephrata" John to distinguish him from the other John Landis European emigrants who came to the Lancaster area in the 1700's.

Our "Ephrata" John Landes died 14 May 1756 and Margaretha 22 Sept 1780. John and Margaretha are said to be buried in the Landis-Kemper Cemetery in the borough of Akron, Lancaster Co. All the stones are lying flat, overgrown with grass and only tiny parts of a few stones are visible. This cemetery appears to be the far upper end of the 135 acre property that "Ephrata" John Landes patented from the Penn's on 16 March 1738/9 (patent A-1-189, can be seen on microfilm at the PA Historical Society in Philadelphia). Standing at the cemetery on Scenic View Drive in Akron, one can look down the hill and across the fields and see the rusty old oil tanks just off Rothsville Road that are on part of his property. Rothsville Road cuts his property in half. The lower half (northern half) is bounded by Cocalico Creek and Rothsville Road, the creek makes a big loop and at the northern end both Hammer and Middle Creeks join Cocalico Creek. This is bottomland and does get flooded. There is an old stone house on the south side of Rothsville Road at Millway Road. We wonder if this could have been the family home. The old barn across Rothsville Road was torn down in 1999. An old brick house, down by the juncture of the three streams, burned about 1998.
